So, to mark their umpteenth rebrand in the past few years, NME have decided to have ANOTHER greatest album ever poll! (I think they’ve done about 900 of these right? Or is that just me?). Anyway, they came with an interesting choice, with The Smith’s ‘The Queen Is Dead’ coming out on top.
Now, considering in a not so distance past, the NME was known in musical circles as the ‘New Morrisey Express’ (clever pun right? :) as he got so much exposure in it. It isn’t that much of a surprise is it? I mean all music is relative, so one person’s favourite album may or may not be another’s and their list has been compiled from people who have worked at the NME since it began.
So clearly, The Smiths/Morrissey album was bound to come top, but I believe they have got this drastically wrong. For one, I don’t think ‘The Queen Is Dead’ is even The Smith’s best album! (personally I like Meat is Murder better, shoot me)
I don’t actually know what my favourite album would be, there are different albums that define different things, for example, the album that changed my life because it gradually opened my mind to other music listening genres (I was an avid 50 Cent fan back in the day) was Arctic Monkey’s first EP ‘Who The F*** Are The Arctic Monkeys?’ which from when I heard the opening cords of ‘View From The Afternoon’ literally had me hooked, I couldn’t put it down. When ‘Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not’ came out, it became another one that I must have played 100 times in the first hour (slight over exaggeration) of me having it.
Then there are the albums that got me into music in the first place, Eminem’s ‘Marshall Mather’s LP’ and especially Stan (which then got me to buy the album at the tender age of 11, my parents were not impressed). Then there’s the albums you discover at different points in your life, like whilst I was in college, The Pigeon Detectives first album ‘Wait For Me’ sound tracked my life for about a year, ever car/bus journey that was blaring out of my earphones of stereo.
After that there was the beginning of University and meeting all of the new best friends that you will know for the rest of your life! (I’m still friends with about 5 people I met in freshers week…) such as Foal’s ‘Total Life Forever’ or Yeasayer’s ‘Odd Blood’
Also, there are album that are just so legendary that you have to listen to them, which is where the brilliance draws you in like a moth to a flame (as it were) such as Nirvana’s Nevermind or In Utero, or Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon or any Beatles album.
I can only think of one more way in which my musical tastes have been altered by albums, and that is seeing bands at festivals/gigs that you’ve never seen before and thinking, oh dear, how have I not heard much of these before. Two albums that stick out in my mind for that are Arcade Fire and especially ‘Funeral’ from them (even though I’m a big fan of everything they’ve done! And Pulp, Pulp have to be one of the best live act’s I’ve ever seen, and they’re album (that I listened to after seeing them) ‘Different Class’ actually got me into Britpop, where I delved deeper into the back catalogues of Blur, Oasis and Suede to name but a few!
There are so many more albums that I could mention that I love and will be in my top 10, but we could be here for days and it’s so difficult to pick my top 10, when I could barely pick a top 100, so basically, what I’m trying to say with this blog is, who cares what NME think are the best album’s ever made, make your own mind up! Though below is a list of the albums on my iPod that I’ve listened to most times the whole way through (so must therefore be my favourite).
