How do you get 2 songs simultaneously in the top 10? Giving you the chance to create and enlarge a production company. As well as work with labels including Sony Music and Universal Records? We recently caught up with member Matty Menck from Brooklyn Bounce about his incredible journey through the music industry and how he’s become successful.
In the early days, I was working at my father’s film company. There I learned a lot about film, editing, post-production, audio and music placements.
End of the 80s I started DJ-ing in local clubs as a big passion. Found out quite quickly that just DJ-ing wasn’t enough and I wanted to create my own music and spent every possible time in developing my skills and every money in music gear like samplers, synths and my first Atari computer.
To extend my knowledge I did some internships in music & mastering studios and completed the SAE (school of audio engineering) as a Dipl. Audio Engineer. After successful graduation, I was building up my own little production company, focusing on own production & releases and commissioned productions as well.
A bit later I teamed up with Dennis and we produced an opening theme song for a compilation series called Progressive Attack. This song reached top positions in the main dance charts. Therefore the record company decided to produce a music video. Brooklyn Bounce was born.
This song went straight into the top 5 of the German sales charts and we had to deliver a quick follow up. Resulting in getting 2 songs simultaneously in the top 10 including the achievements of the first golden record awards. But this was just the beginning…
It was time to think big. By the way, the mixing desk of our main control room was the AMEK /Neve console from the famous US music group C&C Music Factory (Hit: Everybody Dance Now).
During the following years, we have produced 5 albums and a lot of singles with Edel Records, Sony Music & Universal Records. Followed by more golden and platinum record awards from all around the world, as well as a US Billboard Chart entry, German Echo & Viva-TV Comet nominations. During this time we did countless shows & DJ performances worldwide.
After about 10 years of this successful journey, it was time to re-think. The entire music industry was in a big change caused by the spread of the mp3 music format and the final breakthrough of the internet. On the other hand, computers, software and plugins have become more and more powerful. Meaning that large and hardware-packed studios were no longer needed.
For this reason, redesigning was part of the re-thinking process and I moved to a smaller place without a big mixing console. Focused on an acoustically well-developed room, excellent speakers, microphones, pre-amps and of course state of the art audio plug-ins and software.
Followed by releases on Toolroom Records, Ministry Of Sound, Tiger Records, Sirup Music, WePlay, Tonspiel, Kontor Records and many more. Besides of remixes for Watermat, Oliver Heldens, Felix Jeahn & Mike Williams, Nicky Romero, Maxim Schunk, Faul & Wad and nice support from the international high profile DJ league, like Tiesto, Erick Morillo and Roger Sanchez, just to name a few.
Accompanied by national & international DJ gigs and festivals such as Parookaville, World Club Dome, Elements Festival, besides of my 14 years long DJ residence in one of Germany’s leading house music clubs, the HALO in Hamburg. At the HALO club, I’m also responsible for the high profile DJ bookings as a talent booker. As a talent booker, I brought artists like Avicii, Eric Prydz, Hardwell, Afrojack, Laidback Luke, Chuckie, Salvatore Ganacci, Don Diablo and many others to the HALO Club in Hamburg
During the time with Brooklyn Bounce, we were working with different mastering studios, but never 100% satisfied with the results. The mastering process of an electronic dance music track is very different from conventional mastering. Even professional and non-specialized mastering studios regularly work up a sweat when it comes to club and dance music. For this reason, I decided early, to take care of the mastering process by myself. As in the field of music production, mixing & mastering, in particular, is subject to constant change and requires continuous further development of skills every day.
After serving this service area in the past exclusively and on requests from friends & colleagues only, last year I decided to officially offer the full range of my studio & audio services to everybody. Now you can find my services such like mixing, mastering, sound design, jingles & brand IDs, music for film, web and advertising and full music- or ghost productions on my official studio website.
My first contact with Мusic Gateway was at the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) a few years ago where I have met Jonathan from M.G. He told me about the plans and opportunities of Мusic Gateway and I immediately realized the potential of an entrance in the sync, advertising and production music business.
It is no secret that in times of streaming & Spotify these days it is becoming increasingly difficult to make money with your own releases. For this reason, I see Мusic Gateway as an additional utilization of your own music catalog and thus as an additional financial pillar. So I’m still in the process of importing my entire music catalog into the Sync Portal. But not limited to this I’m always checking opportunities on Мusic Gateway. If there is a suitable briefing and I have enough time I would also produce targeted music for a pitch. [Update: Matty got a sync placement only one month after this article was published! – Read about Matty’s sync success here.]
One of the most exciting things is that you never know what’s going to happen with your music. It’s a bit like gambling to be in the right place with the right song at the right time. This basically applies to the entire music business, because even the great successes in the past could never be planned.
You have to be aware that this is a 24/7 full-time job. It’s a long way off and means big restrictions in matters of private life and leisure. This only can work if you make your hobby and passion to a profession. A job in constant change and where you have to be prepared to learn something new every day. In addition to the productions and the experience, it is just as important to deal with social media today. This part can quickly make up an extra big time factor. So be careful when choosing a job like this.
A new single is about to be released soon on 1st Strike Recordings. Then I have some mastering jobs in the queue that need to be finished soon. I am also planning further single productions on the DJ side. I’m looking forward to being part of this years Parookaville Festival again.
