The message of the track is ultimately uplifting and hopeful – that you can get past anything that comes your way.
The total lockdown dance banger, ‘Higher Ground’ was written and produced remotely. As Bryan was in Canada, and Amanda was in Denmark, they had to take a more modern approach to the writing and recording process. Bryan teamed Amanda up with two writers (one in Mexico, and another in the UK) to write the track, and they worked through the concept via Zoom. This was Amanda’s first time using her own beloved Neumann mic after years of recording squished inside a cupboard, whilst Bryan finessed the final mix of the track in his London studio – truly a dynamic & futuristic production style!
Boom Dice: “The escapism of being taken to ‘Higher Ground’ is a universal concept which is really what I would like listeners and fans to take from this. Be happy, have fun, dance your ass off and you will bust through whatever comesyour way.”
Amanda Rakel: “This song is about venting your frustration over a failed love and continuously facing the same dating scenario. So I just want people to ugly cry while they dance to it; completely and utterly allow themselves to be angry and frustrated about the situation without having to find some character-building lesson behind the situation.”
‘Higher Ground’ was written with the intention of crafting an uplifting poppy earworm. Bryan put Amanda in the driving seat for devising the lyrical content herself. She said: The duo think it may make you “ugly cry whilst you dance”, whether you hear it on Pop Radio or searching on social media for new dance gems. Drawing comparisons to Loud Luxury, Tiesto, Cheat Codes and Ellie Goulding’s EDM collaborations, ‘Higher Ground’ is catchy and perfectly summery, with an irresistible dance hook.
Amanda Rakel: “When it came to deciding on the topic for the song, I was just going through being ghosted by someone who had seemed incredibly dedicated. Hattie, Pari (awesome female co-writers) and I made a ton of notes on the dilemmas of modern dating From endless my-partner-must-be checklists to shallow dating apps, it’s as if being yourself isn’t good enough anymore.
This resulted in my favourite line in the song: “I won’t keep on changing, don’t wanna edit myself for your love”. The lyrics are about someone leading you on, making you think “this is it”, only to end it abruptly, leaving you confused and completely floored.”
