An up-tempo murder ballad, inspired by the Lead-Belly classic ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night?’. ‘Daddy’ is the latest new single from U.S based band Denizen.
‘Daddy’ is a narration where the character sees himself as a saviour to the woman he is addressing. Freeing her from what he perceives to be an abusive relationship by murdering her ‘Daddy’.
In reality, we as the listener don’t even know if the narrator and the woman are in a relationship at all, or if his regard for her is mere infatuation.
“In the words of the chorus: “I don’t have to tell you what you already know.” We think the story in the song is pretty engaging; we leave it to the listener to make what they will of it.”
The brainchild of cousins Dave Schafer and Pete Vale, Denizen formed in late 2011, used as a form of therapeutic release from the pressure of day to day life. After adding on bass guitarist Andrew Wilkes, drummer Ben Selznick, and keyboard player James Gettinger, the band was complete in early 2012.
Getting together to play informally for a year or so, singing, talking and enjoying each other’s company, the band initially only focused on their favourite rock covers and whatever melodies happened to pass by. This, however, would develop into something more, and they soon found themselves writing songs together, songs they liked so much that they wanted to share them with the world.
In 2013, Denizen played their first live show, from there things took off. Finding themselves playing to larger crowds each time they took the stage, becoming a staple on the Lower East Side music scene, quickly moving from mid-sized venues like Arlene’s Grocery and Pianos to professional concert halls like Webster Hall, Bowery Ballroom, and Brooklyn Bowl.
Soon after they began touring up and down the East Coast and have grown a strong regional following in cities from Boston, MA to Washington, D.C.
After several lineup changes, with Dave, Pete and Rashid (who joined in late 2017) still at the core of the band, the trio recorded their debut LP ‘Afterglow’ in 2019 at Studio G in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Featuring their touring musicians Ross Procaccio on drums, Dylan Defeo on keyboards, and Eric Launer on bass, who had been involved intimately with the Denizen catalogue for years prior.
While the COVID-19 pandemic has put their touring schedule on an indefinite hiatus, Denizen has been steadily building their online following.
