Sombre undertones add a depth to this track. Layered intensity in the mix shows the instrumentation respond and adapt to each other perfectly. Varying modes of vocal delivery offers dynamic and effective shifts in the drive of the work.

So Said

Reverb-laden acoustic guitar opens the track. A sense of melancholy and unrest is heard in the quality of the scratchy tones. The vocal entry is accompanied by a buried beat. With a slight counterrhythm to the guitar, this addition is immediately noticed and grabbing.

As the track begins to open up, excellently articulated filtered drums duet with the vocal delivery. An almost modular sense of unpredictability in the percussion makes this immediately engaging.

Thom Yorke recalling sound design displays a maturity in the production of the track. The percussion feels organic in its development, with an uncanny presence of synthesis and plasticity. The expressive tweaks in the sounds’ parameters keep the section distinctly musical in presence.

The standout of the track, however, is the brilliantly evolving vocal performance. At times gentle with an air of fragility and vulnerability, the softer moments in the work are embodied in this earnest.

As the track shifts to more driving, energetic sections the phrasing and intensity in the voice reflects the new familiarity. Phrasing and melody combine to show an evolving lead line. The verses exhibit more percussive vocal styles with a rising tension. Responding cadentially to the themes, the tones rise appropriately to push the sections along.

The main hook of the track sees the voice switch to an upper range. Bringing with it more intensity from the soaring reverb and filtered echoes that swirl in the mix. The catching melody and repeated phrases provide an anthemic quality to the work.

  • Overall rating: 8/10
  • Pairs well with: As I Am Alicia Keys
