Gabriel Urgell Reyes is back with his upcoming release ‘Altera Majestas’. This eclectic, electro-acoustic track is packed with beautiful piano music and gorgeous Mezzo-Soprano vocals from the great Isabelle Druet. – Out November 27th.
Starting off as a poem, Gabriel soon felt the need to evolve ‘Altera Majestas’ into a musical form – blending different tones and textures that work as a mirror of the text. The inspiration for the song is linked to the common thread of his album: a being that observes attentively the human spirit via the characteristics of plants – with each element representing something different.
“Take care of what we have and to preserve it. Stop hurting ourselves morally, physically… to be critical of the actions that lead us into despair and desolation, to develop listening, understanding and empathy towards our environment.“
Recorded over two sessions in Studios Malambo, Paris – one dedicated to the piano and the other for the vocals, the track was then mixed by Gabriel himself with the help of a friend and sound engineer, Aude-Marie Piloz, and mastered by Simon Gibson at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.
Gabriel Urgell Reyes is an award-winning experimental French-Cuban pianist, composer, artistic director and producer based in Versailles, France.
Known for his boundary-breaking, cross-disciplinary compositions that blend genres such as contemporary classical and jazz with Afro-Cuban rhythms, Gabriel’s bold creative dynamism and intercultural musical eclecticism are redefining traditional images of a classical musician and modernising the archaic, stagnant genre in line with the diverse, global values of the 21st century. The visionary composer first made history at age 25 when, shortly after graduating, he was appointed soloist of the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra and was made a Professor at Cuba’s University of Arts (ISA). Gabriel’s technical, expressive, and impressive mastery of piano – underscored by his contemporary virtuosity and instinct for innovation – has dazzled global audiences ever since.
From Biarritz to Beijing, Gabriel has made his mark as a pianist and chamber musician at festivals, arenas, and concert halls worldwide. His album ‘Metaphor of Silence’ was nominated in the “Album Eclectic” and “Music Producer” categories at the 17th Annual Independent Music Awards in New York City (2019), and he’s also earned a sweep of prestigious awards and nominations throughout his career (Diapason d’Or, Blüthner laureate, 4 Stars Classica and Qobuzissime, to name a few).
