Coming in heavy and wasting no time to explode with hard hitting drums and sharp distorted guitars. Have a Fight is grainy, melodic rant through the medium of indie alt-rock.
For its duration, the track maintains a pleasantly melodic structure to its hard-hitting chordal riffs. Most notably, the bass tone is particularly clean. This contrasts nicely with the grating drum sounds and trashy distortion that smothers the guitar. As the lead accompaniment to the vocals in the verse sections of the song, this creates an accessible anchor point that take a central role in the frequency mix. While holding down the bottom end of the spectrum to ground the somewhat wandering frequencies of the guitars and drums, the tone bridges the gap in the mid-range between the instrumental and the vocal delivery.
Furthering this function of balancing frequencies, the vocal section has a permanent filter effect. This gives the performance a harsher tone and very slight distortion. Enhancing the bright yet scratchy aesthetic of the work, this effect keeps the voice cutting through the mix with a subtle coarseness.
Compositionally, the track follows a simple repeating minimalist phrase. The defining changes are found in the instrumental performances and presence in the mix. Where the arduous bassline is leading the charge, the dynamic range is brought down to a steady drive. However, the choruses see a flustered crash enter the fray. This combined with the more aggressive and confronting vocals, and the scratching, chaotic guitar tones lifts the work to a much more severe level of opposition.
‘Nick McKinnon and his aggressive brand of trap metal, along with his signature dark instrumentals – everything he does he produces, records, mixes and masters himself – have grabbed the internet and Generation Z by the ears and won’t let go. Currently working with two other upcoming artists, as well as his own album set for release in September, it is apparent Nick McKinnon does’t sleep.’
