Combining electronic and classical influences into one dynamic pop ballad. Heart Crimes is made of echoes of hits from the last few decades, but not without originality.

Heart Crimes

Immediately we are met with pristine production. The balance of light percussive effects and spacious harmonic delivery sweetens the opening content. All in the space of the first minute we’re offered coloured voicings and early 2000’s cadential technique.

A particularly modern synth pad makes sporadic and layered reinforcement. Lightly entering the mix to emphasise rhythmic phrases without cluttering the stereo field or forcing a dynamic shift.

During the track we hear several variations on percussive techniques like this. For more delicate touches, the harmony-laden lead voice leans heavily on small anchoring rhythms. Pausing and enunciating pivotal formants to give a subconscious percussive pattern. Less subtly, and equally effectively, are the range of drum samples and performative filter sweeps that build hard hitting sequences.

Each time the chorus is brought back around it is somehow developed and evolved for a more immersive delivery. Through stacking electronic voices and aggressively received rhythmic play. The use of dramatic production techniques excellently emphasises such elements. With French electronica inspired sidechaining pulling harmonic reverberations in and out of attention under the meandering vocal play. Woody and analog sounding snare hits with just a touch of noise cut through the glistening synths for maximum effect.

Heart Crimes articulates coloured and well-crafted lyricism with a mature and professional aesthetic. The track touches on several stylistic choices and nails every one.
