Full-bodied and morose sounding piano achingly marches across the majority of the work. Clever variations in the performance keeps the minimal instrumentation organically evolving and engaging.

Hold Me Again

Present in all elements of the track is heartful and earnest emotional delivery. Compositionally, the track carefully takes advantage of its sparse instrumentation. Opting to include various forms of performance on each instrument respectively, the work offers an intimate display of transparent delivery. All of these features combine to form an authentically powerful piece of music.

Meandering, and slowly descending in fractal tones, arpeggiation fills the space beneath fading, fragile extended vocalisations. These sections show the use of voice as a uniquely passionate instrument, even without lyrical content. The sheer heart that can be heard in the melodic jumps and almost whispered phrases are a testament to everything that makes Hold Me Again such an artistic release.

The Thom Yorke-esque vocal performance placates immediately with its disarming delicacy. Always reflected and responded in the piano work, the gentle collection of melody and harmony is consistently present. The only huge variation in the work comes in the last verse, when we are introduced to orchestral strings. The slow fading sustained chord tones emphasise the minor qualities of the work’s harmonic content. Enhancing the gravity of its emotional weight and furthering its encompassing atmosphere.

Hold Me Again is a truly beautiful output on love lost. On every count it harnesses its chosen limitation and never feels anything less than authentic.

About Chairman Bao

‘The name ‘Chairman Bao’ was conceived on a night out eating all ‘baos’ (or steamed buns) in sight in Taipei. Aside from this obsession with baos, Chairman Bao plays guitar and bass, and makes jazz / chill hop music through an SP-404SX, and hopes to reflect the love of Hong Kong and Chinese culture through music.’ – Taken from Spotify bio.
