90s feel good pop through the lens of a contemporary producer. Magnetic takes the quintessential features and tropes of early millennial pop composition and applies modern studio-creation techniques.
Opening with a hard-hitting synth bass paired with an energetic shuffling drum sequence, the track immediately sets a fast paced and weighted tone. Bell-like soft tones join in, bringing the lead vocal with them.
A simple repetitive rhythmic phrasing makes up the service of the vocal delivery throughout. Though the melody evolves and has more explorative moments in the choruses, the same sub divided rushes are felt across the duration of the track. This successfully functions to maintain the feeling of pace and drive created early on from the instrumentation.
The vocal performance leads the sections and is supported rhythmically by the instrumental backing. Entering and fading in long phrases without pauses between words puts the vocal lead as the focal point of the track. This is responsibly acknowledged in the composition by opting for variations in the instrumental track when the voice is not present. This, in turn, adds developments and more unpredictable sections of the track without breaking the pace.
Compositionally, the track never stays on the same motif too long. Further reinforcing the sense of movement, the instrumentation is constantly making subtle changes or additions to its performance. This is done through layering opposing tones for a more complex structure, or by vamping and evolving the rhythmic performance of the soft-tones.
Magnetic is a somewhat nostalgic form of easy listening radio pop. Containing familiar harmonic and rhythmic device4s in the voice and pairing them with a 2000’s era electronic production aesthetic.
