An integral part of Mickey Cake‘s live set for years, ‘Parakeet‘ channels elements of modern shoegaze, filled with vibrant guitar tones and rhythmic riffs that do nothing but make you want to get up and dance – Out Now!

‘Parakeet’: Call Me What You Want

Written between 2013-2015, as part of a duet composed by guitarist Brian, it took a while to rename it from ‘Brian’s Song #2‘. Detailing a long distance-relationship, the track narrates the lengths someone can go to keep the flame alive.

Once it was named ‘Parakeet‘, it became part of a marathon recording session in which the band recorded ten tracks in two days. It was the only time that all four of them, childhood friends and a set of brothers could be gathered in the same room before going their separate ways once again.

Recorded at The Boom Room in Philadelphia, the bass, drums and rhythm guitar were recorded live, with vocals and lead guitar overdubbed to give it a raw feel, with a clean finish.

As track four on the ‘So That You Know’ album, ‘Parakeet’ marks the halfway point for the love story that is explored throughout the album. Channelling elements of modern shoegaze, Mickey Cake have carved their own effortlessly catchy, feel-good sound.

Who Are Mickey Cake?

Mickey Cake‘s members are childhood friends – Jonny, Graham and Brian grew up in and around Philadelphia where they soaked in the city’s rich musical history. After years apart, vocalist & guitarist Jonny Drucker‘s successful solo work compelled them to record a full-length album together.

So That You Know‘ is a compilation of songs the band has collected over a decade of collaborating and jamming together. Blending the familiar, homely foundations of folk & americana with modern, bright electric guitar, the band takes inspiration from the likes of The Strokes, Kings of Leon, Shakey Graves, J Dilla, Bob Dylan and Dinosaur Jr.

Recorded mainly over the course of a single, intense weekend at The Boom Room, PA, where the band survived primarily off subs from a local deli, ‘So That You Know‘ is full of standouts. Inspired by the unmatched energy of their live shows and jams, propelled by Brian’s intricate, raw guitar work carried by Jonny’s poetic and thoughtful lyrics – the album was indeed a labour of love, over ten years in the making.
