‘…don’t take advantage of my love for you…’ Pick It Up is a modern tragedy for subjects of love in a digital age.
Compositionally, the track is of classic minimalism form. A simple percussive sequence is maintained throughout. Though little variation is found, little is needed. The focal point here is not the instrumentation, but the lyrical content.
The narrative told by Moise is a simple one, delivered with earnest. Opting for unassuming and direct phrasing, the track is built of small statements without any pretence of grandiose poetry. ‘…now you’re taking me for granted, with every phone call I make to you…’ the narrator solemnly accepts the state unrequited love and carries this theme in his delivery.
Instrumentally, the track plays on the common trend of reggaeton inspired pop of recent years. Simply repetitive beats with bell like synth tones and electric guitars taking a background role in the mix to imply a harmonic progression without taking over focus from the vocal lead.
The work is capitalised by the warbling pitch and modulation on the lead vox. Again, typical of tracks that fall into this style for its effectiveness in adding distinct and emotionally charged delivery.
Pick It Up is one in thousands of songs of this style, but perhaps one worth listening to with some regard for its content.
