Warm and fuzzy synth tones, cheesy tom fills, energetic drums and delayed leads. The CHVRCHES meets Lorde sound of Everdeen is expertly displayed across the track. Immediately catching and memorable, the vocal delivery is both dynamic and authentic in tone. A genuine joy of performance and connection to the lyrical content can be heard spilling over the words.

Simple diatonic melodies in the vein of The Cure prelude the first verse, perfectly articulating the tone and mood of the piece. This same method is used several times to add texturally sensitive harmonic content to the vocal melody.

The driving bass section combined with the pristine vocals offset the fuzzy synth tones filling the mix, providing a distinct balance between the two stylistic deliveries and combining them for a more powerful performance.

‘…why do you stay here…’ the vocal lead sits on cadential resolutions throughout the verses and lifts into emotionally weighted melisma and cries in the hooks. Featuring more explorative melodic sections and drops in instrumentation, the emotional tone of the work is most emphasised in the choruses.

The bridge section pulls back to the song’s most withdrawn moment and slowly introduces each feature that makes it great. Simple driving bass tones under melodic and harmonised vocal phrasing. Meandering melodies dip and rise back and forth alongside, adding a more three-dimensional harmonic texture.

Lifting into the finale, the drums come in hard and swinging with the collective chord work across the mix. Ending with the main melody once again the piece is perfectly resolved and settled both harmonically and melodically.

This Place combines the best of its influence and displays in an original contemporary format objectively on par with its peers.

  • Overall rating: 9.5/10
