The distinct production style is made apparent immediately. A combination of filtered sounds layer to create crisp and woody textures. Smooth vocal delivery dance between the sections and ties the work together as one piece.

The vocal delivery begins with a hazy performance. Softly sung, almost spoken, phrases over a simple beat present themselves with a slight fragility. The percussion section is heard but performs with a slight reserve. Its attack dulled slightly by the filter, but the kick effect is pronounced and pushing the work.

The introduction of dry hi hats on the off beat increase the sense of pace. This development draws a more house and dance feel to the track. Rounded bell-like tones supplement the melody and provide some harmonic content to this slight dynamic lift.

A distinct cycle of repeated motifs makes up the memorable moments of the work. Classic tones in the plucky chords. Small call and response sections with rising melodic tension. Of particular note is the percussion section. Seemingly selecting some of the most classically recognisable timbres from different eras and staking them up. There are 90’s metallic tones, 2000’s kicks and pitched beeps. In this, and many other ways, the track truly feels like the sum of its influences.

For the duration of the track a shifting dynamic drive is maintained. Whether the responsibility moves from percussion to vocals, or rhythmic plucking synths, there is always a push present.

The sparser arrangement of instrumentation allows each element to be more notably present. Often it feels as though a series of duets, with each section’s distinct themes. Even in the vocal performance, there is a structure of familiarity and spontaneity in the organic developments of pitch and melody.

  • Overall rating: 7/10
  • Pairs well with: Sweeter Sonny Beau
