Gentle developments and thematic instrumentation. Explorative melodic play and Celtic-influenced harmonic work. Soldier is a catchy pop track presented with some twists in the arrangement that keep its motif evolving for its duration.

Soldier

The track opens with a simple piano phrase. Setting the tone for the rest of trac, but also beginning the slow dynamic shift that crosses the work. A simple comp serves as the rhythmic and harmonic accompaniment to the voice.

There is a slight rigidity to the piano performance in the verses. Combine this with the dry snare roll -clearly emulating a military marching snare to match of the theme- and you’re presented with an interested blend of flexibility and strict action.

The majority of the melodic responsibility is shouldered by the vocal lead. Though at times reinforced by a string accompaniment, the melodic tones are explored by meandering vocalisations. Strictly resolving diatonic play is employed for a comfortable connection between phrases.

Particularly in the choruses, simple lyricism is partnered with repeated melisma for a catchy and effective narrative output. The series of statements that make up the chorus are the key to the encompassing concept. With the arrangement embodying its dynamic peak and the performance becoming its most engaging and exploratory.

Soldier is a sparse work, and appropriately so. Some mechanical whirring and strings support the work. However, the piano and vocal duet, with reflections from the percussion, are the focal point. There is an audible element of honest fragility, but with a touch of defiance present.

  • Overall rating: 7/10
  • Pairs well with: 100 Years Five For Fighting
