Soulful indie pop at its most recognisable. Almost gospel guitar clean tones. Vibrato organs and extensions. Dry and heavy-set drums paint a backbeat for a swathe of driven leads and punchy bass.
Say It To Me is anthemically catchy. It’s chorus-oriented structure displays a compositional awareness of peer works. Using verses simply as a transitional device between repeated hooks leaves enough space for dynamic arcs, but not so much the pace and motif drops away. In this same method of effect, we feel the largest compositional shift in the bridge section of the song; where we hear new vocal exploration and backing harmonies come into play. Further use of the in-key harmonic variations creates a more colourful quality to the instrumentation, showing a progression of the ideas present on the verses.
The composition of the work is largely based around a minimalist approach to contemporary writing. Simple repeated phrases layer over each other to form a familiar bed of textures. This formula allows each instrument to explore minor embellishments within its pocket without risk of cluttering the mix.
This is particularly successful when investigating the delivery of the lead guitar and melodic bass playing in the verses and transitions. Both instruments respond to and echo certain phrases from the vocal lead. This serves to anchor the melodic work of the track for a more recognisable collection of phrases. Additionally, these smaller melodic accents maintain the track’s sonic depth – pulling favour against other works in the genre that may be content to utilise more basic phrasing.
All in all, the track is achingly catchy. It holds its simplicity as a strength and outplays its own stylistic choices to excellent effect.
