This week in the industry…
Secondary Ticketing – the ongoing debate via Music Week
It’s heartbreaking when you can’t get tickets to see your favourite band on their latest tour. Sadly, there are people out there who take advantage of this and sell the tickets on for an outrageous fee.
There have been multiple petitions signed by managers and members of some of the biggest bands and acts in the industry, all calling for the government to take action and tackle this problem. Economist Professor Michael Waterson has published a 226-page report on the matter, which you can read all about here (via Music Week)
If you want to hear what those in the industry have to say on Waterson’s report, check out this article. Now that clear suggestions have been outlined and proposed, will the government take action on the matter?
The industry is boarding planes, trains & boats and heading to Cannes for the 50th MIDEM event. Three of the Music Gateway team are heading there including our CEO Jon Skinner, who is also speaking on a panel. Very exciting!
There’s going to be hundreds of key industry players, from the biggest companies alongside innovative new companies with huge potential.
Our bloggers have written some really great stuff which MIDEM have featured on their site, but it’s too good not to share it directly with you as well. Take a look below.
Help Musicians UK asks – Can Music Make You Sick? via Music Week
Help Musicians UK is an independent charity that aims to get musicians of all ages & backgrounds back on their feet after crisis.
Mental health isn’t something most would associate with the music industry. Most might see it as attending gigs, playing in a band, parties, networking, travelling the world on tour etc, however some experience the darker side.
The MAD (Music and Depression) campaign was launched earlier this year at The Great Escape. It aims to bring the issues some professionals face to light and get people talking and more importantly, listening. They’ve commissioned research into mental health in the music industry and it starts with a survey that they are urging anyone working in music to complete, which you can find here
Steve Reid Innovation Award – Applications Open
Our partners PRS for Music have teamed up with the Steve Reid Foundation to provide an incredible opportunity for emerging artists. They’re offering support in the form of a grant of up to £1,500 to help with their creative goals and receive mentoring from an experienced working artist. They’re looking for unsigned and unmanaged artists who are writing and performing their own music and pushing musical boundaries to apply.
“It is so exciting to be involved in a project that encourages and develops new talent and gives opportunities to artists who might otherwise never get a break. Steve Reid would be smiling!”Gilles PetersonSteve Reid Foundation Founder
