Ethereal echoes and minimal instrumentation, ‘White Light’ is a haunted combination of distant gliding delivery and melancholic phrasing.

White Light

Warm and foreboding synth tones introduce the cinematic and spacious bed of texture. Resonant percussive hits enter and serve to introduce the cleaner, more traditional piano/percussion combination. Maintaining an atmospheric air of withdrawal and despondency, small groupings of cadential phrases create a flexible tone to be explored and orbited by layered vocal melodies.

Where composition is minimal and simplified, the sound design and production of the track takes precedent as a defining feature. Lo-fi percussion and effected vocals create a full, yet fragile tone. As if sitting on the very edge of distorted performance, the voice never feels too imposing or too despondent, simply meandering in and out of the mix. Emphasis is placed on melodic developments, and reversed audio acts as a precursor to more complex and exploratory diatonic phrases.

Memorably, CAZZA makes frequent use of portamento techniques, portraying an alien and slightly dissonant compositional stance. This is further highlighted by heavy-handed use of delay. Clashing melodies, echoed in layers, form very slightly ‘off’ sounding chord tones that morph and bounce into each other as the vocals gradually fade out. This creates a jarring listening experience without detracting from or altering the mood curated thus far.

‘White Light’  employs  an atmospheric and cinematic approach to contemporary electronic singer-songwriter outputs. Featuring numerous vocal techniques that extend beyond simple melodic delivery, CAZZA intimately engages with the sound design and works to serve the piece as a whole.
