Blending elements of blues guitar composition and indie inspired production, You draws heavily on various contemporary influences, stretching as far as Latin melodic work and play.
The track opens with the focus on lead vocals and electric guitar. Drenched in reverb, the two layer over and under each other with dynamic and textured playing highlighting key chord tones and moving root notes to ground the voice. With heavy embellishment but controlled crescendo, the vocal performance here makes up for the simplicity found in the instrumental work by sitting just before the edge of too decorative. Adding interest and exploration to an otherwise typical melody, this section serves to highlight ChloA’s controlled range.
Lifting into the body of the work, the faster vocal rhythms and the introduction of a percussion section immediately portrays the radio-friendly and contemporary influences on the track, all present without compromising the musicality of each component. Lead guitars trail in and out of the mix under and between vocalisations – creating more interesting harmonic content as understated as it is eloquent. This continues for the duration of the track, weaving between the rest of the instrumentation and emphasising the more dynamic sections of the track and maintaining the emotional weight of the composition overall.
The finale of the piece is filled with embellishments on all sides. Harmony laden vocalisations, driven guitar solos and staccato hits from the bass – reinforced with sporadic electronic drum sounds.
Here the harmonic and rhythmic cooperation found across voice and strings is particular present, subtly creating counter-rhythms with the percussion section.
You is easily listening but noticeable colourful, carrying its own weight by means of genuine love heard in each level of instrumentation.
