Denny Leroux – New Sync Success For ‘Moffie’!
Meet Denny Leroux from Storm Of The Century Music! Denny has just successfully had his music synced to a new South African film ‘Moffie’ by Oliver Hermanus. The film was featured at the 2019 Venice Film Festival Awards. Read more about Denny, his exciting past and how he got this sync placement. (As well as tips on how to get a sync placement yourself!)
First of all, tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into music. What’s your role in the industry?
I started a band with my high school friends where I grew up in Nyack, New York. That was the beginning of my songwriting as well and led me to club gigs in New York City, and a career as a working musician. It was a great time for clubs in the 1960s and it wasn’t unusual to find myself sharing the stage with locals like Jimi Hendrix (still called Jimmy James then), Joey Dee and the Starlighters, and Frankie Lymon, some of whom were unknowns at the time. It was a wonderful education in performing. I then played with most of the great society orchestras of New York as a singer/guitarist. At everything from charity galas, private parties, to Presidential Inaugural balls. Throughout I continued writing and producing my own songs.
Was this your first sync?
This is a wonderful placement – we are excited to be part of this film – but it’s not our first. We have placed songs in feature films, HBO original films and shows like “Weeds”, U.S. network TV shows like “NCIS” and “Cold Case” and the BBC show “Little Britain.”
How did you feel when you heard that you got a sync placement?
It’s so gratifying when the hard work of pitching pays off with an email saying you’re in! Also, we love being part of quality projects, and we were even more thrilled when we read about the film and the fact that it is in the Venice Film Festival and slated to be in others.
What’s it been like, getting your music in a film like Moffie?
It’s been especially fun with this song, as it’s an early one; A “period piece” from our publishing company catalog at Storm of the Century Music, Inc. Really nice to have those older songs appreciated, in addition to all the new work our company Storm Music Studio, here in Atlantic Beach, Florida, is producing now with young artists.
Are you planning to watch Moffie and listen out for your Music?
Yes, as soon as the film hits the U.S. we look forward to seeing it. And will buy a DVD for our studio collection as well.
How long have you been a member of Music Gateway and what do you think of us?
Not sure on this one but for quite a few years. You provide a truly valuable service, especially for smaller publishers and independent artists.
What would be your top tip to anyone trying to secure a sync placement?
Join Music Gateway and follow the directions! Make it easy for the music supervisor – send only your best work, ready to go. And, of course, persistence!
What are your plans for the near future?
My wife and partner, Judith Leroux, and I continue to write and produce music to add to our ever-growing catalog at our publishing company, Storm of the Century Music, Inc. (Which you can read more about here.) In our working studio, Storm Music, we provide a high-quality recording experience for all kinds of musicians, from singer/songwriter to classical. We also really enjoy collaborating with and mentoring young artists.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Looking forward to continuing to work with you and more sync placements!
