Musician Romain Olivieri Explains How The Internet Has Opened Doors for Musical Collaboration
By Mary Woodcock on 02 Sep 2016
“The Internet has opened us to so many possibilities and chances of meeting artists from all around the globe, which makes it as much difficult to find the right collaborator.”
The countless genres we have on the platform never cease to amaze us. For this reason, we’re glad our members can find other individuals (some from across the globe) to connect with. Recently we were pleased to catch up with Romain Olivieri as we discussed ways musicians can expand their musical genre knowledge, his opinion on the platform and the truth about staying proactive on digitally based sites aimed at musicians.
#1 Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.
I’m a 27-year-old pianist and composer from Paris, France. I’ve studied classical piano when I was young and eventually turned to composition and band music. I’ve been in several bands and currently compose for short movies.
#2 You’ve been on the Music Gateway platform for a while now, how are you finding it? Have you noticed any recurring benefits?
The website is great and very intuitive. The projects displayed are diversified and there’s always something I can start working on.
#3 I can see you’re a talented musician, who plays the piano and who isn’t limited to one genre of music. What advice would you give to other musicians to expand their musical knowledge and grow as a musician when they don’t feel they’re making any progress?
To grow as a musician, one has to keep learning and opening his perspectives to new horizons. Taking instrument lessons, learning new styles of playing, listening to new bands and experience new ways of composing. But this shouldn’t deviate the musician from his own voice and personality. He should always stay true to who he is.
#4 In regards to your most recent project, what are the main advantages for you with running projects through the Music Gateway platform opposed to working with existing connections?
I’ve been looking for a long time for a platform such as Music Gateway to collaborate with talented people. I feel like it is the most efficient platform to work with people you’ve never met. Being able to upload and comment work in progress is really useful. I wouldn’t say it has helped me as a musician because I didn’t challenge my musicianship through this particular project, rather I wanted to start a collaboration with a talented rapper and I did.
The Internet has opened us to so many possibilities and chances of meeting artists from all around the globe, which makes it as much difficult to find the right collaborator.
#5 Can you tell us about your most recent project, are any of the results being released anytime soon for people to check out? Did you find what you were looking for?
My most recent project is a collaboration with the artist/rapper Visual Poetics, with whom I composed a song condemning gun violence in America. We’ll film a video to upload the song on YouTube on my channel Retaliation very soon.
I haven’t yet achieved my goals on the site because I yet have to be successful in the projects proposed by Music Gateway for sync and song placements. I’m working on improving my skills to pitch better quality songs and music in order to be successful someday.
#6 What advice would you give to members in order to stay pro-active on the website?
My advice would be to keep working on new projects and keep opening yourself to other people’s talents to collaborate and create new beautiful music.
