Top 10 Best Comedy Movies
Let’s jump straight in and begin our countdown of the best comedy movies of all time!
10. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs (2009)
This charming offering is one of the best family comedy movies to watch. It’s an animated feature that came out back in 2009 and is now available to watch on Netflix.
So, what’s it about? Well, the film centers around a guy called Flint (who wants to be a scientist) who lives in a town called Swallow Falls. The problem is his latest invention has begun to turn water into food – and soon it begins to rain (you guessed it) meatballs!
The meatballs look good enough to eat, and that’s thanks to the wonderful and believable animation. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at The Golden Globe Awards and Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards!
9. Best Comedy Movies – 50 First Dates (2004)
Are you looking for a memorable date night movie? Then 50 First Dates is sure to please, as it’s up there with some of the best romantic comedy movies ever!
It was released back in 2004 but it’s still very much a treasured favorite of romantic comedy lovers.
The movie is stunning to look at (thanks to it being set in sunny Hawaii) and is true escapism just for this reason alone!
The film follows the story of Henry (a vet) as he meets his art teacher Lucy. However, little does Henry know that Lucy suffers from short-term memory loss and will forget everything from the day as soon as she drifts off to sleep that evening.
The sweet (and funny) film sees Henry try and win Lucy’s heart – over and over again.
8. Elf (2003)
Picture the scene: comfy PJs, slippers, blankets, and a mug of hot cocoa – the only thing missing is a funny Christmas comedy movie on the TV. Well never fear because Elf is here!
This surely cuts as one of the best Christmas comedy movies. Many hailing this as Will Ferrell’s best performance ever!
He plays Buddy the Elf, who has been raised by Santa and his elves. When he learns that he’s adopted, he goes on an adventure to New York to connect with his biological father (a real bah-humbug kind of guy!)
Watch and marvel at Buddy’s ability to spread Christmas cheer wherever he goes. It’s sure to put a smile on your face and fill you with Christmas cheer!
You can also expect plenty of Christmas songs to sing along to, and the soundtrack to this movie was extremely popular. It was released back in 2003 in the US and in 2005 in the UK.
In fact, in the US, it holds the place for the second-highest-selling soundtrack album for a Christmas movie and sits behind The Polar Express.

7. Game Night (2018)
We think that this is one of the best American comedy movies to be released in the year 2018. If you enjoy action comedies packed with plenty of twists and turns then you need to add this to your watchlist!
It follows a group of friends on one of their famous game nights, and this time it’s a murder mystery theme.
The only problem is that things start getting a little too real for this unsuspecting group of friends, and this is where the fun begins!
6. Monty Python And The Holy Grail (1975)
We think that plenty of people would agree that Monty Python And The Holy Grail is one of the best comedy movies on Netflix. It is a classic after all!
It was released back in 1975. But it still makes it to a ton of lists detailing the best comedy movies of all time.
Even though the clue is in the title, let’s explain the premise. It’s all about following a group of characters on their quest for the Holy Grail, and of course, everything doesn’t quite go according to plan!
If you haven’t seen it yet you’re in for a treat and we highly recommend it. It’s one of the best UK comedy movies, with plenty of evidence to back this claim.
In 2000 Total Film Magazine readers voted it the fifth greatest comedy ever. Furthermore, in 2006 viewers of Channel 4 voted it into sixth place out of the 50 best comedy movies of all time!
5. The Big Sick (2017)
If you prefer to watch the best independent comedy movies then The Big Sick is one for you. This movie was released back in 2017 and had its big debut at a film festival – the Sundance Film Festival to be exact!
The film did incredibly well, as it only had a budget of $5 million but ended up grossing $56 million worldwide. In fact, it actually became one of the highest-grossing independent films of 2017!
Fun fact: the script is loosely based on Emily Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani’s real-life relationship. Their screenplay was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay!
The film follows a couple dealing with cultural differences. As well as a bump in the road when one of them slips into a coma. If you have an Amazon Prime account then load it up now, as this is one of the best comedy movies to watch on Amazon Prime!
4. Superbad (2007)
This American comedy was released back in 2007 and it became somewhat of an instant classic. Now, let it be noted that this isn’t one to watch with the kids as it offers crude and tongue-in-cheek humor.
It could be a great date night comedy movie option or a good movie for a friend’s night in.
So, what’s it all about? Well, the film follows two teenagers, Seth and Evan, as they navigate high school, parties, and girls. That’s about all we can say without giving the plot away, so go and discover it for yourself!
Superbad was another financial success story, with only a $20 million budget and it grossed over $170 million. It also gained plenty of accolades. Such as Best Male Performance for Michael Cera at the Canadian Comedy Awards 2008.
At the same ceremony, Seth Rogan won the Best Writing category. Additionally, at the Young Hollywood Awards in 2008, Emma Stone won Exciting New Face.
3. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga (2020)
So, we think it’s safe to say that nobody had high expectations for this movie. But, it was one of the best surprises of 2020 and arguably one of the best comedy movies in general!
As you’ve probably guessed by now, it’s a musical comedy surrounding the iconic Eurovision competition.
This is a comedy movie with a huge heart, as it has some truly emotional moments. You follow two best friends from Iceland as they go through their Eurovision Song Contest journey. A journey that will put their beliefs and friendship to the test!
Plus, the music is fantastic! The songs are sure to stick in your head and make a home there for many days (or weeks) to come.
My personal favorites include Lion of Love, Double Trouble, and Husavik. The movie soundtrack was released in 2020, and it received a well-deserved nomination for the Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.
Check it out on Netflix today – you won’t regret it!
2. Groundhog Day (1993)
This fantasy comedy was released back in 1993 and remains a firm favorite among comedy lovers. How would you feel if you were forced to relive the same day over and over again? Doesn’t sound good, does it?
Well, that is the premise of Groundhog Day, as the film sees a weatherman relive the same day over and over.
The movie came in at number four in the BBC Culture rating of the best 100 comedies of all time. It’s easy to see why!

This musical comedy was released back in 1984. Our list of the best comedy movies of all time wouldn’t be complete without it!
