When sending a demo to record labels you first need to do a little bit of research. Find out what kind of artists the record label generally deals with, do they generally deal with bands such as yours? If they do then that’s an excellent record label to send your demo to, one that’s going to listen to your music and know where you’re coming from with the sound that you’re creating. If the record label knows about your style of sound then there’s a far better chance that they might sign you; don’t take it for granted that they will, but they just might.

You don’t just want to send your demo off to one record label though; send the demo out to many to increase your chances of getting signed. Always research the record labels, make sure the label is suited to your needs and also that they have past experience with your kind of sound. Say you’re in a rock band for instance, you don’t want to go sending your demo to a dance music record label as they’re just not going to take you seriously. You want to target relevant record labels and this way you’ll have a far better chance of success in being signed.

Go onto the internet; do some research, and seek out the labels that best suit your needs. Send demos out to these labels and these labels alone; there may be a few others that you wish to try your luck with, always send demos out to labels that will know what to do with your music however and know how to best produce and market your music.

Picking record labels to send a demo to is not a particularly easy task, you need to think the process fully through and make sure that you’re not wasting any time by just sending out discs to record labels that are completely unsuitable. Getting signed is not an easy process, every stage of your progression needs to be thought through and this includes the sending out of demos. Pick the record labels that suit your sound, the ones that you feel will be able to progress you and further enhance your talent; get the best out of you and perhaps even gain you some commercial success at the same time.

Picking the right record labels to send your demo to is an all important stage in your musical career. If you get signed to the wrong kind of record label then this can ruin you as the record label will take you in the completely wrong direction and once you lose the backing of that record label then there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to find another. Always send demos to record labels that suit your needs, suit your sound, and also that you trust. It’s important that you trust the record label and this is therefore something that also always needs to be considered when sending your demo out to record labels.

So choose record labels that you feel comfortable with, pick record labels that suit your sound, and then send out demos to those record labels. If you’re only sending out demos to record labels that you trust then all will be well and good.
