It can be extremely difficult these days for artists to get their music noticed. With such a competitive market and so many different platforms available, it can get more than a little overwhelming. Artists have to worry about tons of things already, including creating the track, distributing it and promoting it. Some artists dream of hearing their song in a poignant movie scene, and some just want to get it out to as many people as possible. Well, good news – Songtradr offers both music publishing and licensing in one place, so artists have access to both! In this article, we will look at Songtradr, including what they do, how they work and review whether it is worth signing up.

What Is Songtradr?

Essentially, Songtradr offers artists the opportunity to license, distribute and monetize their music all in one place. In terms of licensing, Songtradr connects artists and musicians with those who want to purchase their music. This includes producers, major brands, TV, video games and film companies and more. Artists upload and showcase their music to make it available for licensing, and it is a mutually beneficial platform for both artists and buyers. Having worked with giants such as Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, NBC and various big name brands, it is safe to say that Songtradr is gaining traction in the music licensing and Sync worlds. In regards to their distribution services, Songtradr offers music distribution to get your music out into the world, sending your tracks to major streaming platforms in the same way that CD Baby, DistroKid and various others do.

Songtradr Features

Here comes the fun bit – what features Songtradr provides. From licensing to monetisation and more, take a look at some of the best parts of the online platform.

Sync Licensing

Songtradr offer Sync licensing, which can be extremely lucrative but difficult to attain for artists. Sync licensing involves artists having their music used in TV, Film and video games. This is a great feature of the platform, and something that Music Gateway also offers.

So, how do you submit your music for licensing? Firstly, upload your tracks. Then, enter the song information to clear your music for discovery in the licensing marketplace. This includes Recording, Copyright, Creative Metadata, Audio Files, Pricing and Approvals. You can also upload additional files such as Instrumentals and Clean Versions. These additional files will be connected to your ‘Main Mix’ for easy file management and reference for buyers.

Once you have filled in all the information, you can set your pricing for your track and review ownership terms, contracts, and agreements. It is a pretty straightforward process, and once you’re done, your music is available to be licensed!

Tip: your song will not be discoverable in Songtradr’s marketplace until all Ownership Information is filled out and approved by all rights owners. You can increase your chances of getting your music licensed by including keywords, moods, and genres – so fill in as much information as possible!

Profile Page & Interaction With Fans

songtradr public profile page artists

Artists are given their own profile page, which features statuses, feature tracks and playlists to highlight standout work to fans or potential buyers. Similarly to social media platforms, fans can also follow artists to stay updated on what artists are doing, which allows for greater engagement and offers the chance for more people to find you and your work. Fans will be notified when you release new music as well, which is a great way to keep them engaged and with your music at the forefront of their mind.

Tipping

Another great feature is around monetisation through a tipping system. Fans can tip their favourite artists directly, and for those using the free plan, you get to keep 75% of your tips. For those on the Songtradr Pro plan, you get to keep 100% To start receiving tips, simply upload a track, highlight it on your profile page and you can start receiving support.

Feedback & Notifications

Songtradr keeps you in the loop of how your music is performing through their notification system. Similarly to Spotify for Artists, Apple Music for Artists etc, artists can see stats and get a better idea of their audience and what is landing well (artists can also access their Spotify for Artists etc as with other distribution sites).

What Does Songtradr Cost?

Are you also wondering ‘how much does Songtradr cost’? Allow us to look into pricing and what users get for their money (or for their free account). The online platform offers varying plans that differ in price – Starter, Lite and Pro. Let’s look a little closer at what each plan offers:

Starter

As you have probably guessed, the Starter plan is completely free to use. However, artists only receive 120 credits to use to submit their music for licensing, and they do not receive access to any distribution services. For Starter accounts, Songtradr also takes 40% of the royalties for all licenses.

Lite

The Lite plan fee is $19 annually. Technically with this plan, you are still a ‘free’ user – but you are also given access to unlimited distribution services. With a Lite plan, artists receive 240 credits to use to submit music for licensing. As with the Starter account, Songtradr will take 40% of the royalties, also.

Pro

The Pro plan is priced at $5 per month, or $49 annually. For this, you can distribute an unlimited amount of tracks, and you will receive 3000 credits for submitting your music to licensing opportunities. Additionally, your music is distributed to over 200 stores such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and so on. For this plan, Songtradr will take 20% of the royalties.

For Artists

Songtradr caters to and features various artists from differing genres, as well as producers, signed artists, sound designers, bands and more. Therefore, you can rest easy in knowing that they know how to handle what it is that you or your band are selling.

In terms of artists pricing their music, they have the option of customising how much the project is selling for (although, bear in mind that Songtradr advises artists to stick to the default pricing). Artists can also state which type of project they would like to earn money from.

Is Songtradr Worth It?

So, you want to know whether Songtradr is worth it?

Songtradr doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and can provide artists with exposure and opportunities. So, what is there to lose? We would say that Songtradr is worth a shot. If you want to test the waters first, simply sign up for a Starter account.

However, if you are in need of more services, Music Gateway offers similar features and more! Music Gateway offers a 30 day free trial, which includes Sync and A&R opportunities that artists submit tracks to. In this case, artists can take control and submit their music to projects that they feel their music suits. Also, they can upload their tracks into our sync portal with their metadata and information before submitting to projects.

Price / Features Comparison

For $7.50 a month, Music Gateway’s Adventurer Account offers file storage, playlist curation, file sharing and copyright protection, as well as some catalogue management, sync representation and the limited ability to submit tracks to projects. For $22 (Influencer Account), Music Gateway offers unlimited sync submissions and representation, a 10% music promotion discount, and even some feedback on your tracks. At the top end (Game Changer, $37 a month), there are 20% promotion discounts plus unlimited and priority services. Check out our comprehensive list for more information on what is included. Additionally, Music Gateway only take 20-25% commission from sync licensing. So, you can keep more of the money your music has earned.

Both Songtradr and Music Gateway offer similar experiences, but for a little extra a month, you can receive a wider range of services with Music Gateway. However, if you are just looking to publish or license your music, Songtradr is cheap, efficient and reliable. It comes down to what you are looking for, your budget and your personal preference. So, do your research and see what suits you and your goals best.

Final Thoughts

Songtradr is cheap and easy to navigate for even the least tech-savvy among us. Although Songtradr are relatively new to the game, they offer some promising opportunities for artists. The Sync opportunities open up the world of licensing to artists who otherwise may not get the opportunity. So, the platform is really helpful for independent musicians who want to get their music published and earn money from their music. It is definitely worth giving Songtradr a try in order to gain some traction with fans and get your music heard by the right people.
