Primephonic was one of the leading classical music streaming platforms until 2021. You would have used the platform if you were a classical music enthusiast. But sadly, it is no more. We will delve deeper into why this was the case. And what other classical music streaming platforms there are that you can use.

Who Was Primephonic?

Primephonic is a now-defunct music streaming service that exclusively offered classical music.

Primephonic is a classical music streaming service that was founded in 2014. It was founded by two Dutch entrepreneurs, Thomas Steffens and Simon Eder. The idea for Primephonic came about when the founders realized that there was a lack of high-quality classical music streaming options. They wanted to create a platform that would cater specifically to classical music lovers. And provide them with the best possible listening experience.

In 2017, Primephonic launched its streaming service in the United States and Europe, offering a vast library of classical music recordings from major labels such as Sony Classical, Universal Music Group, and Warner Classics.

Primephonic Features

The platform also features exclusive recordings from smaller labels and independent artists.Primephonic’s unique features include high-quality audio streaming, curated playlists, and detailed metadata for each recording, including information on the composer, performers, and recording location.

The platform also offers a user-friendly interface that allows users to easily search for and discover new music.

In 2021, Primephonic was acquired by Apple Inc., with the intention of integrating its features into Apple Music to improve the classical music experience for its users. The acquisition was met with mixed reactions from Primephonic’s loyal user base, but Apple has promised to continue to offer the same high-quality streaming and features that Primephonic users have come to expect.

It has since expanded into other countries, including Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK. It was launched in the US back in 2019.

In Qobuz’s own words, they explain that they formed the company to offer the digital world the aspects of music fandom that audiophiles have always cherished. That meant quality sound, quality editorial, and freedom of choice that wholly excludes bias. They also wanted to design a service that catered to highly specialized music lovers, all over the world.

Tidal is a music streaming platform that offers high-quality audio and music videos. It was launched in 2014 by Norwegian company Aspiro and was later acquired by Jay-Z.
