It’s no secret that the music industry is a famously male-dominated industry with 70% of artists on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Chart (2022) being men. Although the amount of female artists on this list has increased from 23.3% in 2021, there is still much work to be done before we can say that women have equal opportunity in the music industry.

While certain areas of female-representation have improved over the years, reports show that female credited songwriters have consistently seen little growth. In 2022, 14% of songwriters were women, a ratio of 6.7 men to every woman songwriter. Beyond songwriters, the amount of female producers and engineers is shockingly low with only 3.9% of producers recorded as women compared to 96% of male producers.

Here at Music Gateway, we are blessed to work with incredible women and female artists striving to support their careers in the music industry. This International Women’s Day we’d like to highlight key achievements from Women in the Music Industry, celebrate incredible female artists within our roster and organisations supporting women in music.

Some Key Highlights:

Rosalía wins first-ever Producer of the Year Award at Billboard Women in Music Event

The talented Spanish singer said the win felt extra special being the first-ever Producer of the Year Award given out at the event. The singer added, “Thank you today for celebrating women and what we create. This means a lot because I make my own music, I produce my own songs and I write my own songs,” the 30-year-old gushed. “I would love to dedicate this award to all the women that are going to be producers because I’m not the first and I’m definitely not going to be the last one.

Kim Petras makes history at the 2023 Grammy Awards

Although the Grammy Awards has a very long way to go in terms of gender equality, Petras made history when she and Sam Smith took home the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their single ‘Unholy’. This made Kim Petras the first openly transgender woman to win the prestigious award.

Natalie Shay granted Women Make Music Fund

We have been very lucky to work with Natalie Shay on a number of her fantastic recent releases. Last month, Natalie was granted the Women Make Music Fund from PRS Foundation. The aims of this incredible fund are to break down assumptions and stereotypes within the music industry by encouraging role models for future generations, raise awareness of the gender gap and  increase the profile of women, trans and non-binary artists who are creating new music in the UK.

We value all the wonderful women we work with across our diverse roster. If you haven’t listened to any of the below already, we fully recommend checking them out and supporting their music!

  • Phoebe Willo
  • Natalie Shay
