Lil Wayne is one of the greatest and most well-known rappers in music history.  Lil Wayne has decades in the game, after rising to prominence in the Hot Boys, with Juvenile, B.G., and Turk on the Cash Money label.

Lil Wayne background

Lil Wayne was born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. on September 27, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record executive, entrepreneur, and actor and is regarded by many as one of the most influential hip-hop artists of his generation and is often cited as one of the greatest rappers of all time.

Lil Wayne’s career began in 1997, at 15 years old he was signed by Cash Money Records and half of the duo, The B.G.’z, alongside fellow New Orleans-based rapper B.G. At the time, he was the youngest artist signed to Cash Money Records.

In 1999, Lil Wayne released his debut solo album, Tha Block Is Hot, which was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His subsequent albums, Lights Out published in 2000 and 500 Degreez in 2002, went on to be certified gold.

In 2004, Lil Wayne released his fourth studio album, Tha Carter, which included the hit single “Go DJ” which was number one on the hot 100 for weeks. The album was certified double platinum and helped to launch Lil Wayne’s career into the mainstream.

In 2008, Lil Wayne released his sixth studio album, Tha Carter III, which sold over 3 million copies in the US alone, becoming his most successful album to date. It featured hit singles such as “Lollipop” and “A Milli”, some of the biggest hits of his career and rap singles of all time.

The album was certified triple platinum and won four Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album. At this point, Lil Wayne had created one of the biggest rap careers in the music industry.

Lil Wayne has since released nine studio albums, I Am Not a Human Being (2010), Tha Carter IV (2011), and I Am Not a Human Being II (2013). He has also released numerous mixtapes, as well as being featured on numerous tracks by other artists, He is also known for his numerous collaborations with other artists, most notably with Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Lil Wayne has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.

He has won five Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album for Tha Carter III, and has been nominated for an Academy Award for his song “Man of the Year” from the soundtrack to the film, Suicide Squad.
