The time has come to announce the lucky winner of our #StayAtHome Songwriting Competition!

Stay At Home Songwriting Competition

If you’re unsure what we’re talking about, earlier this year we launched a #StayAtHome Songwriting Competition to encourage and reignite the creativity of songwriters. So that your time in lockdown could be used wisely to produce some really great songs!

We asked you to write songs around the topic of mental health and offered one lucky winner a free Мusic Gateway Game Changer account, testimonials from our judging panel of industry professionals, and a dedicated blog post on our Мusic Gateway page.

Everyone here at Мusic Gateway would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated. So many of you did and it was a great pleasure receiving your entries!

After a tough deliberation, we narrowed them down into a shortlist and we finally have a winner!

Without further ado, the lucky winner is (*drum roll*) …Matthew Ellis!

Congratulations Matthew!

Who Is Our Songwriting Competition Winner Matthew Ellis?

Songwriting Competition winner Matthew Ellis

London-based Matthew Ellis releases music under the name Burlington – his indie pop altar ego. He was born and raised in Durban, South Africa but has lived in London for the last 5 years.

Matthew began making music 5 years ago, but it was more electronic in the vocal house genre under the name “Matto”. Then, during the first lockdown, he created his new sound under “Burlington”, with a more indie pop feel.

“Bad Day,” his winning single, explores a sound that has a floating, ethereal mood that describes what living under a grey haze can be like.

No matter how strong of a person you are, Matthew communicates that anyone can struggle with mental health through his ceaseless, unchanging, and unrelenting sound. Suggesting that some days are in fact, just bad days.

A Chat With The Songwriting Competition Winner

We had a chat with Matthew to find out what he had to say about his win and what he has planned for the future.

Why Did You Enter This Songwriting Competition?

I entered this competition as I had just written my song Bad Day which is about how anxiety has been affecting people during these lockdowns, me included.

It was perfect timing when I saw the competition as I had just finished the song.

How Did You Feel When You Found Out That You Had Won?

I was very surprised but it was a great feeling, a positive note to end this strange year on!

So I’m very thankful to everyone who listened and enjoyed it!

What Are Your Plans For The Future?

My plans are to get performing live as soon as we are allowed, it would be great to play my songs live.

Other than that I’m just going to keep on producing and honing in on my skills.

Even though these lockdowns are not great, they have given me time to do what I love!
