“It’s Been a Long, Long Time” is a classic song originally recorded by Harry James and his Orchestra in 1945. The song became an instant hit and has since been covered by numerous artists, showcasing its timeless appeal. In this article, we will explore the history of the song and some of the most notable covers.

“Long, Long Time Ago” is a popular song from the end of World War II, composed by Jule Styne. The lyrics convey the emotions of an individual welcoming their spouse home after the war.

It’s Been a Long Long Time lyrics:

Never thought that you would be

Standing here so close to me

There’s so much I feel that I should say

But words can wait until some other day

Kiss me once, then kiss me twice

Then kiss me once again

It’s been a long, long time

Haven’t felt like this, my dear

Since I can’t remember when

It’s been a long, long time

You’ll never know how many dreams

I’ve dreamed about you

Or just how empty they all seemed without you

So kiss me once, then kiss me twice

Then kiss me once again

It’s been a long, long time

Harry James, a remarkable instrumentalist from the swing era, was known for his distinctive bravura trumpet style. As one of the leading bandleaders in the first half of the 1940s, he continued to guide his band until shortly before his death, four decades later. Born to circus performers, Harry’s father Everette Robert James was a bandleader and trumpet player for the Mighty Haag Circus while his mother Maybelle Stewart Clark James worked as an aerialist. Raised in this environment, Harry began performing as a contortionist at just four years old.

He soon transitioned to music, playing snare drum from around six years old and learning trumpet from his father. At 12, he assumed leadership of the second band in Christy Brothers Circus where his family worked. Harry attended grade school in Beaumont, Texas during winter breaks and won a state music contest as a trumpeter at age 14.

In 1942, James ranked just behind Glenn Miller as the most successful recording artist. He had seven Top Ten hits that year: “I Don’t Want to Walk Without You” (Top Five) featuring Helen Forrest; “Sleepy Lagoon” (number one instrumental); “One Dozen Roses” (Top Five) with Jimmy Saunders; “Strictly Instrumental” (Top Five instrumental); “He’s My Guy”; “Mister Five by Five” (Top Five); and “Manhattan Serenade.” The final three songs featured vocals by Helen Forrest.
