This week in the industry…
Only 1 Track in UK Radio Radio’s Top 20 Songs of 2016 Was Originally Released This Year via Music Business Worldwide
According to RadioMonitor, an airplay tracking service, only one song in the Top 20 biggest tracks on UK Radio so far this year was originally released in 2016. Every other song was released in 2015 and/or has had a remixed version released this year. Not a great message to send out to new artists! People thought the addition of streaming figures into the charts would make a huge difference to the tracks played on UK Radio, however it seems this is not the case. Spotify hits 100m via Music Week
Spotify have confirmed that they’ve passed the 100m users a month mark. That seems like an outrageous number, which compared to any other streaming service it is. However, according to new research only 14% of the UK actually subscribe to a streaming service. The report found that 23% of the population are still purchasing CDs. Why are we different to a Sync Agent?
Publishers ask why we are different to a sync agent. Writers will ask why we are different to a publisher. It’s a question that we have been asked many times when people are trying to understand exactly what it is that we do and what they get out of the open marketplace concept. We’ve explained exactly what we do and why we’re different here.
Why do publishers want cover versions of songs?
You hear an awful lot of covers these days on adverts, in TV shows etc etc. This isn't just a new trend, there's valid reasons behind why covers are used. You can read our blog here to find out exactly why

Our partners PRS for Music have teamed up with the Steve Reid Foundation to provide an incredible opportunity for emerging artists. They’re offering support in the form of a grant of up to £1,500 to help with their creative goals and receive mentoring from an experienced working artist. They’re looking for unsigned and unmanaged artists who are writing and performing their own music and pushing musical boundaries to apply.
“It is so exciting to be involved in a project that encourages and develops new talent and gives opportunities to artists who might otherwise never get a break. Steve Reid would be smiling!” Gilles Peterson - Steve Reid Foundation Founder

Laika Network Launch Original Song Contest
Our friends over at Laika Network have launched a pretty wicked competition. All you need to do is submit a video of you performing an original song. Yes that’s it! The only rule is no covers. The competition closes on 26th June 2016 so you’ve got plenty of time to get things perfect. You can find more details here
Do you need a vocalist to bring your original track to life? Do you need an instrumentalist to accompany you? You wouldn’t want this to be the reason you miss out on the contest, so create a project to find the people you need!
*Project of the Week*
Every week we’ll be choosing a project that we think is not only a great opportunity, but also a good example of a textbook project e.g. full bio & description, reference tracks (if applicable), photos, full personal profile etc.
