Position: DATA ENGINEER (DATA AND INSIGHT)
Employer: PPL
Location: LONDON, UK
Category: DATA
Salary: COMPETITIVE
Closing Date: MARCH 24TH 2021

Founded in 1934, PPL is the UK music industry’s collective management organisation (CMO) for over 110,000 performers and record companies.

We license recorded music in the UK when it is played in public (shops, bars, nightclubs, offices etc.) or broadcast (BBC, commercial radio, commercial TV etc.) and ensure that revenue flows back to our members. These include both independent and major record companies, together with performers ranging from emerging grassroots artists through to established session musicians and globally renowned artists. PPL’s public performance licensing is carried out on PPL’s behalf by PPL PRS, the joint venture between PPL and PRS for Music.

We also collect performance rights internationally when music is played overseas in public and used on TV, radio and some online streaming services, as well as for private copying. In 2019 we collected £86.7 million, in part thanks to our network of over 95 agreements with CMOs around the world. International revenues are an increasingly important revenue stream for performers and recording rightsholders. In 2019 we collected £271.8 million while also distributing money to over 119,000 performers and recording rightsholders.

PPL’S DATA ANALYTICS IT TEAM

The Data Analytics team has the mission of using data to inform, empower, and challenge the rest of the business and beyond. We do this by delivering impactful analytics and insight, using leading tools such as Birst, Snowflake, Tableau, Spark, and Python, on the analytics platform we have built up over the last 12 months. The products delivered on that platform range from simple reporting/BI and dashboarding through to “Edison”, our recommendation engine that uses Data Science techniques to suggest specific actions to business users.

COVID-19

PPL continue to follow the government guidance regarding COVID-19 with the priority of keeping of employees safe and well. PPL employees are currently working remotely, we have no imminent plans for this arrangement to change.  We will adopt a remote recruitment and on boarding process for this role and expect it to be based remotely until government guidance changes, at which point office working will be required. This can be discussed on a case by case basis.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

As a Data Engineer here at PPL your primary responsibility will be the development of the PPL Analytic Data Platform (ADP) a cloud based data lake and data warehouse. Reporting to the Data Architect, you will design, develop, test, and release further data pipelines and integrations using appropriate technologies, such as Python, Spark, and AWS services (EMR, Glue, DMS, Kinesis). You work will be mainly focused on the ‘back end’ of the analytics platform, sourcing and preparing raw data from both cloud and on-premise systems. Regardless of tools, the Data Engineer follows a structured process, utilising best-practice methods and scalable design patterns to produce high-quality solutions, so that end-users of the platform can trust that they will have the data and insight they need, when they need it.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Taking primary responsibility for the operational management of the data pipelines and integrations underpinning the ADP
  • Working closely with front-end developers and end-users to ensure that the platform is robust and reliable, performing troubleshooting and repair as necessary
  • Work with the Data Architect and data consumers to translate user and technical requirements into data pipeline designs. Develop and release high-quality pipelines, integrations, and orchestrations that perform well and are suitably scalable
  • Support other data engineers in the team by sharing knowledge and technical skills, specifically in big data, distributed processing and cloud data services.
  • Working with the Data Architect and data engineers to build a repository of reusable design patterns, code and automated tests to accelerate data onboarding into the ADP
  • Refine and improve the ADP code management and deployment processes through the use of Bitbucket, JIRA and Confluence, working closely with the DevOps team to reduce deployment risk and allow for more rapid releases
  • Support the development of ‘front end’ analytics and reporting as necessary, providing optimised data models and assisting in the migration of key operational reports to the ADP
  • Liaise with DevOps and IT Operations teams regarding use of cloud services and put in place the appropriate security profiles, monitoring and usage controls needed for enabling their use across PPL teams

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience of working with large and complex datasets as well as database design and data modelling, ideally star schema and DataVault
  • Experience of working with cloud-based data services (Spark, Snowflake, Redshift, EMR, S3, Glue, DMS)
  • Experience in data warehousing or data lake projects and building and orchestrating data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes
  • Experience of producing documentation/specifications for technical solutions
  • Experience of agile methodologies and JIRA
  • Experience of version control (Git, Bitbucket)
  • Expert user of SQL for data analysis and engineering
  • Proficient in the following: Python, Spark and MPP databases
  • Knowledge of SQL/database performance tuning methods and an understanding of data integration and ETL/ELT patterns
  • Wide knowledge of open source data libraries and frameworks, such as Pandas and DBT
  • Solid understanding of contemporary coding principles and processes, including CI/CD
