About Anderson Kalang
Anderson Kalang, a Kelabit (Orang Ulu) from Sarawak-Malaysia, is a prominent advocate for Borneo's traditional arts and the soulful healing Sape' instrument. Born in Miri, Sarawak, and now based in Kuala Lumpur, he is not only an award winning Financial Risk Consultant but also an accomplished traditional Orang Ulu Dancer and Sape' Performer. Anderson made his Sape' debut at the 2015 Borneo International Gospel Music Festival. He co-founded the Kuala Lumpur Sape' Collective in 2016, promoting Borneo's cultural arts internationally alongside fellow co-founding members. Anderson has performed at major international events like the Rainforest World Music Festival and collaborated in establishing the first Sape' Hub in Peninsular Malaysia, making the instrument accessible to a wider audience. In 2017, he and his partner Saufi Aiman, competed on Asia's Got Talent. He co-founded MupunTauh, a group dedicated to reviving traditional Orang Ulu music & dance. Being one of renowned "Malaysian Sape' Icon", his efforts earned him the 2019 Miri City Mayor’s Award for promoting indigenous music worldwide. His national recognition grew when he composed the Sape' lines & performed the song "Keluarga Malaysia" at the 2022 Malaysia Day celebration. Given the nickname "Sape' Shredder", Anderson continues to innovate his Sape’ finger styling skills, blending it with genres like Pop, Rock, Blues, Jazz and Electronic Dance Music (EDM). Recently, he gained global attention for an exclusive collaboration with British singer Calum Scott, adding Malaysian flavour to Calum's hit song "You Are The Reason", showcasing his Sape' to international audiences. Recognized as one of Malaysia's sort-after Sape' Mentor & Cultural Art Embasador, Anderson Kalang aim to innovate, evolve and continue to push the boundaries of Sape' music.
