About Muimbi Makone
Born in the vibrant heart of Venda, Tshilata in 1981, Muimbi Makone’s music is a tapestry woven from the rhythms of South Africa and the soulful spirit of New Orleans. At just ten years old, Makone’s life took a dramatic turn when his family relocated to Louisiana, immersing him in the birthplace of jazz and blues. By sixteen, he was already experimenting with music, teaching himself to play multiple instruments and absorbing the eclectic sounds that surrounded him. Returning to South Africa in 1998, Makone’s passion for learning led him to the University of Johannesburg, where he earned a BA in Education. Yet, his love for music and media pulled him in a different direction. He dove into the world of sound engineering, collaborating with a diverse array of bands—especially international acts—while honing his craft behind the scenes in top studios. Makone’s breakthrough came unexpectedly: while waiting for a musician who never showed up, he seized the moment, composing lyrics and recording his own tracks. This serendipitous session ignited a new chapter, inspiring him to step into the spotlight as a solo artist. Now based at Mulambo Media in Johannesburg, Makone is not only a producer and IT specialist but also the creative force behind his own project, working alongside renowned producer IYK-Digital. His music is a reflection of his journey—rich, soulful, and deeply rooted in both African heritage and global influences. If you’re searching for music that bridges continents and speaks to the soul, Muimbi Makone’s sound is an invitation you won’t want to miss.
