He began his musical journey by crafting instruments from wooden scraps, inspired by his childhood experiences in tree top houses. His creativity led him to form a band using reusable materials, which gained a loyal fan base in his neighborhood (Ndirande, one of the creative townships in Malawi). Tragedy struck in 2005 when he lost his beloved father, and shortly after, his mother fell seriously ill with tuberculosis. Facing immense challenges in the informal sector without health security or educational support, his mother was forced to move to a village in the northern part of the country, where she was expected to receive treatment, leaving Muhanya to navigate life in the city alone. Determined to create a better future, he turned to his passion for art. Muhanya nurtured his talents on a variety of professional instruments and embraced the world of spiritual music.
