History Of 104.3 MYFM

50’s

KBIG was founded by John H. Poole and was aired in 1952 on 740 AM. The station was originally known as ‘The Catalina Island Station’. By broadcasting the station’s directional signal across ocean water, Poole understood that KBIG could have wide coverage throughout Southern California. Its popularity rose as it presented music, news and commercials in a sequence which was different from competitors. KBIG was named in honour of the station’s original DJ, Carl ‘Mr Big’ Bailey.

In 1959, KBIG-FM began airing its AM signal on the 104.3 FM frequency. The station played instrumental versions of Hollywood, Broadway and pop songs. In 1987, the station moved away from instrumentals and became a soft adult contemporary station and became in direct competition with 103.5 FM.

90’s

KBIG-FM dropped playing songs from the 60s in 1990 and began playing more current hits. 1992, KBIG shifted towards hot AC. In 2000, Clear Channel Communication (iHeartmedia) bought the station.

2000’s

By 2005, KBIG made some changes and reduced commercial time and played 30-minute music blocks, stopped jingles and also altered the musical direction by replacing current hits with re-currents from the 80s and 90s and leaning towards a rhythmic approach.

In spite of having once been a rhythmic-based station, by September 2007 Charlie Tuna announced he was leaving the morning show but would continue to work within Clear Channel’s LA cluster. When the show ended the station tweaked from the rhythmic adult contemporary and started to identify as ‘My FM’. The station adopted the adult Top 40 format similar to its sister station KYSR (98.7 FM).

Sean Hamilton (long-time afternoon host in New York at WKTU-FM) joined KBIG-FM in 2009 as the new host of its afternoon show. He stayed in New York where he voice-tracked his show for MYFM. Following this Dave Styles took over from his slot. MYFM was one of only a few hot AC stations to carry the show. In 2013 the station changed its name to KBIG.

Recently

KBIG-FM’s new approach as “Contemporary Adult Hits” means 104.3 MYFM will play adult hits like Kelly Clarkson, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Shakira, Madonna and many more. Every song played is or was at the top of the charts.
