El Ritmo

Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, is renowned for its vibrant arts and culture scene. Amid this cultural tapestry, RTRFM (Radio Training Institute of Western Australia) stands as a prominent independent radio station, serving the community with diverse and engaging programming. One of its standout radio programs is “El Ritmo,” a rhythmic treasure that explores the world of Latin and world music. In this article, we’ll delve into the heart of “El Ritmo” on RTRFM, discovering the beats and stories that make it a beloved part of Perth’s radio landscape.

The Evolution of El Ritmo

“El Ritmo” which means ‘The Rythym’ in Spanish, is a radio program that has been enchanting Perth’s airwaves for years, offering a soulful blend of Latin, Afrobeat, reggae, and world music. Hosted by a team of passionate music enthusiasts, “El Ritmo” takes its listeners on a global musical journey every Tuesday of the week, showcasing the rich and diverse rhythms from various corners of the world.

In its early years, El Ritmo predominantly played Latin music, catering to the tastes of its Hispanic audience. The station quickly gained popularity, and its reach expanded far beyond its humble beginnings. It became a hub for the Hispanic community to connect, share their stories, and embrace their cultural roots.

Over the years, El Ritmo has evolved and adapted to the changing landscape of radio broadcasting. It has embraced a wider range of musical genres, including salsa, merengue, reggaeton, and hip-hop, making it a comprehensive source for music enthusiasts of all tastes. The station’s expansion was also marked by its move into online streaming, allowing a global audience to tune in and enjoy its content.

El Ritmo has not only thrived in the world of music but has also played a pivotal role in promoting cultural events, celebrating Hispanic heritage, and supporting local talent. It regularly hosts live music events, interviews with renowned artists, and contests for emerging musicians.

Radio Presenters at El Ritmo

El Ritmo Radio Station is celebrated for its engaging and charismatic radio presenters who connect with listeners and keep them entertained. Let’s meet a few of these influential voices:

Aoife Daly: She was raised amidst the picturesque beauty of the isolated Perth hills. Upon reaching the age of 18, she discovered the vibrant local music scene that had been thriving right under her nose, with exciting gigs taking place at local pubs every single week. This ignited her passion for music, leading her to start an extensive record collection.

The Boost Hero Man:  He is a producer who specializes in creating ambient and abstract Hip-hop music. His signature phrase on El Ritmo or other shows on RTRFM, “It’s always a learning experience,” perfectly encapsulates his ongoing journey of discovery in the music industry. When he hosts a show, he gains new insights and knowledge about the diverse world of music. His musical preferences are not confined to a specific artist or genre.

Razor Jack: He grew up in the UK with early punk, but quickly found himself drawn to bands that had their own distinctive sound, like Siouxsie & the Banshees. He caught the bug too and started playing guitar in the Sydney band Toys Went Berserk, back in the 80s. He got turned onto the rockin’ sounds of the 50s when he stumbled upon a tiny record shop in London called “Sounds That Swing” – that started an addiction to records.

Portia Rose:  She has been presenting on El Ritmo and other shows on RTRFM since 2022. Sometimes, she DJs ambient events and performs live sets/poetry readings. She is currently working on an experimental theatre production where she’ll perform a live soundscape. Often, she records mixes in her bedroom and doesn’t show anyone.

El Ritmo has not only been a source of music but also a cultural bridge, connecting communities and celebrating the rich tapestry of Hispanic heritage. Its history, evolution, and dedicated radio presenters have made it an enduring institution in the world of radio broadcasting. As El Ritmo continues to adapt to the ever-changing media landscape, its commitment to music and culture remains unwavering, ensuring that it will continue to captivate audiences for generations to come.
