Spotify is introducing a new AI Persona badge to identify artist profiles built around AI-generated identities, while also removing their music from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default.
The change is the latest move by streaming platforms to create clearer distinctions between human artists, AI-assisted music and fully AI-generated content.
But there is an important point for musicians to understand:
Using AI as part of your creative process does not automatically make you an AI Persona.
Here’s what Spotify’s new policy actually means.
What is Spotify’s AI Persona?
Spotify’s new AI Persona badge is designed to identify artist profiles whose public identity appears to represent an AI-generated person rather than a real human artist.
From August 11, artists can disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona.
Spotify won’t rely entirely on self-disclosure, though. The company says it will also use human reviewers and AI investigative tools to identify profiles featuring photorealistic AI-generated identities.
It is initially focusing on artists that have reached defined audience thresholds, meaning the system will first target profiles being seen by larger numbers of listeners.
The badge is expected to begin appearing to listeners from mid-September 2026 across artist profiles, Spotify Search and tracks within playlists.
Will Spotify recommend AI artists?
By default, no.
Music from profiles identified as AI Personas will not be included in Spotify’s editorial or algorithmic recommendations.
That could be considerably more significant than the badge itself.
Spotify recommendations can help artists reach listeners beyond their existing audience through personalised discovery and editorial programming. Removing AI Persona profiles from that ecosystem creates a clear disadvantage when it comes to organic discovery.
There is an exception.
If a listener actively chooses to engage with an AI Persona, for example by following the artist, Spotify may then recommend their music to that listener.
So AI artists are not being removed from Spotify, but Spotify is making a clear distinction between allowing that music onto the platform and actively helping audiences discover it.
Does using AI in your music make you an AI Persona?
No.
Spotify says the AI Persona label relates specifically to an artist’s public identity, including their artist name and imagery.
It does not determine whether AI was involved in creating the music itself.
That means an artist could use AI as part of songwriting, production, vocals or another part of their creative workflow without automatically being classified as an AI Persona.
Spotify is dealing with those disclosures separately through features such as AI Credits and SongDNA.
The easiest way to understand the distinction is:
AI Persona: Who is presented as the artist?
AI Credits: How was the music created?
For artists experimenting with AI tools, that distinction is important.
Why is Spotify doing this?
Spotify says listeners have expressed frustration at discovering that an apparently human artist is actually an AI-generated persona.
Its response is increasingly centred around transparency.
The company has already introduced AI Credits for disclosed AI involvement in recordings and a verification badge for artist profiles. Profiles that primarily represent AI-generated or AI Persona artists are currently not eligible for Spotify’s artist verification.
Spotify has already been working with major labels on a broader responsible AI framework for music and the wider industry is moving in a similar direction.
Record industry organisations have proposed separate AI-generated and AI-assisted labels, while streaming platforms including Deezer, TIDAL, Apple Music and Qobuz have introduced different approaches to identifying or managing AI-generated music.
This suggests an important shift.
The industry’s response to AI is becoming less about asking whether AI should exist in music and more about establishing where AI has been used, who is behind the music and how that information should affect discovery, royalties and recognition.
What does Spotify’s AI policy mean for independent artists?
For genuine artists building long-term careers, Spotify’s approach may actually increase the importance of having a strong and identifiable artist presence.
Your music is only one part of that.
Artist imagery, social profiles, audience engagement, live activity, releases and your wider digital footprint increasingly help establish that there is a real artist and career behind the music.
As AI-generated music becomes easier to produce at scale, authenticity and artist identity may become more valuable signals rather than less valuable ones.
Spotify’s decision to exclude AI Personas from recommendations by default makes that particularly significant.
Discovery is becoming about more than whether a track performs well.
Platforms are increasingly asking who created it, how it was created and whether there is a genuine artist behind it.
Can artists still use AI on Spotify?
Yes.
Spotify is not banning artists from using AI tools.
The new AI Persona badge specifically addresses profiles representing AI-generated identities. AI involvement in the creation of music is handled separately.
For artists, the direction of travel is therefore fairly clear:
AI itself isn’t necessarily the problem. A lack of transparency is.
As the use of artificial intelligence in music grows, artists should expect platforms to continue introducing systems that distinguish between human creation, AI assistance and fully artificial identities.
Spotify’s AI Persona badge is another major step in that direction.
Spotify AI Persona FAQs
What is an AI Persona on Spotify?
An AI Persona is an artist profile whose public identity appears to represent an AI-generated person rather than a real human artist.
Will Spotify recommend AI-generated artists?
Music from profiles labelled as AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. It may still be recommended if a listener actively engages with that artist.
Does using AI to make music make you an AI artist on Spotify?
No. Spotify says the AI Persona label relates to the artist’s identity rather than whether AI was used to create the music.
When will Spotify’s AI Persona labels launch?
Spotify says the badges will begin appearing to listeners from mid-September 2026.
Can Spotify label an artist as an AI Persona?
Yes. Artists can self-disclose, but Spotify will also use human reviewers and AI investigative tools to identify potential AI Persona profiles.
Can an artist appeal an AI Persona label?
Yes. Artists identified by Spotify will be notified and given the opportunity to self-disclose or appeal the classification.
