Whenever you are reading this Happy International Womxns Day! There’s a pretty big gap across the entire music industry in terms of male to female ratio. USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative published its third annual ‘Inclusion in the recording studio?’ report. This examined the gender and ethnicity of creators across 800 US singles chart hits from 2012 to 2019. Across those eight years, just 21.7% of artists were womxn. The gap was even worse behind the scenes: 14.4% of 2019’s leading songwriters were female. Of the 800 songs analysed, 56.4% did not feature one female songwriter. Only 2.6% of producers were womxn. It’s fair to say there have been improvements across the board. But there’s still a long way to go before we reach equality in the music industry!

International Womxns Day

International Womxns Day

International Womxns Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. In addition, raising awareness about gender equality and women’s rights. It is celebrated annually on March 8th.

International Women’s Day (IWD) has its roots in the early 20th century. Women in many countries began to demand the right to vote, better working conditions, and equal pay. The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America. In 1910, an International Women’s Conference was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was proposed that a Women’s Day be held annually. The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. The date was later changed to March 8, and it has been celebrated on that day ever since.

International Womxns Day – Spelling

The spelling of “womxn” in International Womxns Day is used by some individuals and groups as a more inclusive and progressive alternative to “women.” The “x” is intended to represent and include individuals who identify as non-binary or genderqueer.

International Womxns Day – Women Leading The Charge!

In light of International Womxns Day, we wanted to celebrate some of the talented, strong and powerful womxn with whom we work every day. With no further ado, here are the wonderful womxn behind Мusic Gateway!

Mary – Marketing Manager

International Womxns Day

Hi, I’m Mary and I’ve been working at Мusic Gateway for just over 3 years now. I started as an intern and worked my way up to Marketing Manager with a little bit of time and hard work. I’m so happy to have seen the company become more and more diverse as we’ve grown over the last few years. I’m very proud to work with some amazing women. If you want to work in the music industry but are worried about finding your way in the heavily male-dominated space, I have some advice. Believe in your abilities and don’t ever be afraid to speak up and share your opinions.

Ella – Digital Promotions Manager

International Womxns Day

I’m Ella and I’ve been involved in media industries for a few years now. I completed a degree in Media & Communications in Birmingham, graduating first-class in 2019. Previously, I did a lot of radio work. This included internships at the BBC, directing a student station, presenting, writing radio adverts & music programming. Also research into male-dominated music spaces (such as record shops) and even a brief stint of teaching. But diving head-first into the music industry was a huge opportunity that I had to take up!

Working in such a male-dominated industry isn’t always easy. But it’s so important to amplify the voices of other underrepresented groups & never undersell yourself. I’ve felt silenced before when networking & working in the media industry. Take pride in your work, put the effort in to be kind & thoughtful towards others & let your creativity run wild! My best advice would be to find your passions and pursue them. Start your own projects and manifest your own success. Even if they’re not great at first, you’ll learn how to make them better. Have a labour of love to show others when networking.

Becca – Press Promotions Manager

International Womxns Day

I’m Becca, and I joined the Music Promotions team at Мusic Gateway in September 2020. This was after working within the Support team as well as an Executive Assistant to senior management. I studied Music Business at Notting Hill Academy of Music a few years back. Since then have gained experience in the industry through artist management to PR. The music industry is heavily male-dominated as we all know. As time goes on there are more and more inspiring, strong-minded women that we can all learn from. They guide us and I think now is the perfect time to be involved. Just believe in yourself and your capabilities and you will excel!

Lucie – Content Marketing Executive

International Womxns Day

I was lucky enough to join Мusic Gateway at the end of last year after graduating from university as a Music Journalist. Safe to say that I absolutely LOVE it!  I’ve been involved in the music industry for a few years now, working within journalism and marketing, specialising in brand behaviours, ethos, and cultures. A lot has happened in the music industry over the years, and I have been lucky enough to be able to evolve with it.

Being a woman in music has had its struggles, but thanks to the strong female contribution to this dynamic and growing industry, I don’t think there has ever been a better time to be a part of it. I have always been a huge believer that you get out what you put in, so work hard, trust your own voice, and keep exploring the things that you’re passionate about – You WILL get there!

Leila – Streaming Promotions Manager

International Womxns Day

Hi, my name is Leila and I’ve been working at Мusic Gateway since October 2020. Having always had a huge passion for music I knew it was something I wanted to develop into a career. My job here at MG is my first music-related job and I absolutely love it!

I graduated from Bournemouth University with a degree in Television Production which I loved, but I always knew I wanted to work in the music industry. I’m fortunate to work alongside some amazing people, including some very talented women who inspire me every day. I was nervous to start working in the music industry, with it being my first ‘proper industry job,’ but in the 4 months I’ve been here, I’ve loved every second and I can’t wait to progress my career in music. To anyone that’s music mad and considering a career in music, I say go for it – I did and I’ve never looked back!

Sophie – Head Of Music Services For TV, Film & Advertising

International Womxns Day

I’m Sophie and I’ve been working at Мusic Gateway for so long most of the furniture has probably been there for less time than I have! I studied Business & Management before a short stint in law led me to deep diving into the crazy world of live music followed by my entry to music technology with the Мusic Gateway platform. It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride over the years here and looking back at where things started right up to present day, I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved and the team we have now working together to keep on supporting the independent sector. In terms of being a woman in music, 50% of our workforce is female which is a pretty good sign of equality to me! Of course, there’s always more to be done but it’s great to have that sort of network & support internally.

My advice for people looking to get into the industry is to build yourself a good network, maybe more difficult in these times but, a network of people you enjoy being with and who you can lean on if you need to and they can lean on you too. A lot of things move and change constantly in music and having people you can trust regardless of your position in a business is really valuable for both your career and mental health.

Priya – Artist Liaison Support

International Womxns Day

I’m Priya and I’ve been working at Мusic Gateway for almost 5 months now. I have a lot of experience within retail but I’ve always been interested in working in the music industry. Not knowing where to begin can be daunting but seeing an opportunity to join a great company like this where I could develop my skills and learn so much more was a door opener for me. Working with a team of friendly people and getting to work alongside some lovely ladies makes it even better. Throughout the years, there have been many great changes. There’s still more changes yet to come but look how far we’ve come.

I’m grateful to live in a time where women have more freedom and ambition in their lives. There are many women who’ve been an inspiration, who have been brave and made bold choices and their actions have made a difference for us today. I have to say I’m thankful for the women in my life now who have shown me their strength, encouragement and support. Looking forward to seeing what comes next! Be bold and brave, don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Charlotte – Music Promotion Executive

Music Gateway

I’m Charlotte and I’m very much a new face at Мusic Gateway. Joining the amazing success team as a Music Promotion Executive. Music has been a part of my life since I was young. I find great joy in writing my own music as well as getting excited about finding new artists. Seeing myself in a career in music, I didn’t have the confidence to believe that could be a reality.

The music industry was painted as a place in which women would always be beneath men, but with the little time I have spent with Мusic Gateway, I have felt nothing but warmth, the openness of individual differences and the space for me to be unapologetically myself. For all the young women forging their careers: there will be spaces you will find yourself in where you’re not sure whether you will be accepted, but never tell yourself that you should mute your greatness or the unique voice that you possess. It’s always a ‘them’ problem, never because of you.

Sam – Brand Partnership Manager

Music Gateway

I’m Sam, a new addition to the Мusic Gateway family, however music has been a passion of mine for the last 4 decades.  It all started with a Now That’s What I Call Music cassette, a crush on Madonna, to working in one of the biggest clubs in Ibiza, Manumission, through my early twenties.  Music has kept me company from working as a trainee executive for a sports brand, in a heavily male-dominated industry, to dealing with some of the biggest brands in the UK, where a board rarely had a female presence.  The times are a changin’, women are and should feel confident to speak up, to aspire to be at the top, to be the best they can be! ‘The most alluring thing a woman can have is confidence’ Beyonce.
