Gaming is undoubtedly one of the best and most enjoyable ways to pass the time. But it’s even better when you can share that experience with another person. Or multiple people for that matter. There are so many great 2 player PS4 games to choose from in a variety of different genres. But what are the best 2 player games for PS4?

2 Player PS4 Games

Maybe you’ve only just recently joined the PlayStation community. Maybe you’re looking to expand your games library. Either way, here’s a list of what we consider to be the best two-player games for PlayStation 4.

In this article, we’re going to countdown our top 10 best 2 player PS4 games in different genres. Be sure to stay until the very end to find out our top pick!

10 Top 2 Player PS4 Games

2 Player PS4 Games

We’ve categorized them into different genres so there’s something for everyone.

Let’s dive in!

Racing

10. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled

If you didn’t grow up playing any of the games in the Crash Bandicoot series with vivid memories of defeating the evil Dr. Neo Cortex, we don’t know where you’ve been. Released in 2019 by video game developer Beenox, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a classic-style kart-racing game. This game offers a single-player, online, and local multiplayer mode.

With an 8 player capacity and 56 playable characters, this game is perfect for friends or family who want to spend some time together. What’s better than a bit of friendly competition, anyway?

Crash Team Racing features both local and online multiplayer. Up to 4 players can compete locally, while up to 8 can compete online. However, keep in mind for online playing a PlayStation Plus subscription is required.

There are 40 tracks available with varied levels of difficulty and creative obstacles. Your persistence and navigational skills will have you winning nitro points. These allow you to purchase new character skins, karts and a few other surprises. We don’t want to give too much away.

Interested? Well, whether you’re ready to take on Crash Cove or Cortex Castle… On your marks. Get ready. GO!

Sport

9. FIFA

Considering FIFA is a franchise, we’re kind of cheating here. But that’s because there are so many of them to choose from and all feature multiplayer mode. EA has released a new FIFA game every year since 1993.

Each game is modernised with up-to-date players, teams, stadiums, and competitions. This keeps gamers interested and their expectations constantly satisfied.

There are conflicting opinions as to which FIFA game is the best (and which is the worst). Notably good versions are FIFA 12 and FIFA 17. Whichever you choose, FIFA gives you a strong sense of escapism as it allows you to imagine yourself on the pitch playing among your favourite footballers.

The multiplayer feature allows you and your friends to take over the pitch. Like Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, FIFA games offer local and online multiplayer. Playing local is simple. For online play, you can create a lobby, invite friends and choose who you would like to play with.

One feature of the games in the FIFA franchise that is indisputable is it’s soundtracks. For example, FIFA 12 featured The Ting Tings, Kasabian, Chase & Status and Foster The People, and FIFA 17 had the sounds of Fatboy Slim, Lykke Li, Franz Ferdinand and Imagine Dragons filling it’s imaginary stadiums. Come for the gameplay, stay for the music!

If you’re new to FIFA, ask your friends which game is best, google it, or take a stab in the dark and choose one randomly. If you’re a well-seasoned player and in dire need of new content, fear not! FIFA 22 is expected to be released later this year.

MMORPG

8. The Elder Scrolls Online

If you’re looking for cool PS4 2 player games, what’s cooler than a massively multiplayer online version of your favourite RPG? The Elder Scrolls Online was released on PS4 in 2015 and gives you more freedom than you know what to do with. You can do anything and go anywhere.

You can play alone, with one friend, with one hundred friends or other online players. There’s always bound to be someone online. You can interact with other players through an on-screen chat window, trade items and gold, and compete in one-on-one duels or group battles.

If you’re like us and you’re (im)patiently awaiting news of the Elder Scrolls VI, then this game is for you. In previous games, we have heard stories of Elsweyr, the homeland of the Khajiit, and we have been teased by a brief encounter with the Psijic Order who originate from Summerset.

Now, we have access to Elsweyr, Summerset, Morrowind, home to the Dunmer, and Western Skyrim under the Greymoor update in 2020.

Each location and update include more quests to undertake alone or with other online players. Speaking of updates, Blackwood is due for release later this year which will allow players to delve further into Cyrodiil, home of the Imperials.

Similar to the official Elder Scrolls games, ESO features a leveling-up scheme with skill points awarded when looting, fighting and completing quests. There’s a surprise when you reach level 50, why not find out for yourself what it is?

Puzzle-Platformer

7. LittleBigPlanet 3

One of the best two player games for PlayStation 4 has to be LittleBigPlanet 3. The first and second games were available on PlayStation 3 and thankfully a third game was added to the franchise in 2014. The LittleBigPlanet games have always been considered fun 2 player PS4 games due to the playful and colourful nature of the gameplay and characters. The entire franchise is hilarious and charming, and more than worth your time.

In LittleBigPlanet 3, we follow the journey of Sackboy and his friends Oddsock, Toggle and Swoop, through trials and tribulations on the planet of Bunkum. They must work together to defeat the notorious Newton, impressively voiced by Hugh Laurie, and it is your job to navigate them.

In the course of any given level, there are rewards up for grabs. From skins to accessories, clothing and backdrops, the creativity and amusement is unending.

It may sound simple enough but as a puzzle-platformer, you’ll rely on your intuition and creative intelligence to progress through the levels. Sometimes the answer is right in front of you. Other times you’ll have to look and think harder. Like its predecessors, LittleBigPlanet 3 features exclusively multiplayer levels that require 2, 3 or 4 local players to complete.

This means there is no online feature as such, but there’s something refreshing about being able to play with people side-by-side. Of course, you can play through the game solo and it’s just as fun and rewarding. But you’ll need to complete these multiplayer levels if you want to 100% the game.

Shooter – 2 Player PS4 Games

6. Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered

Initially released in 2007 for the PlayStation 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was remastered and re-released on the Playstation 4 in 2016 due to popular demand. As one of the most critically-acclaimed PlayStation hits of all time, it is no wonder Modern Warfare would be considered among great 2 player PS4 games.

The remastered version of Modern Warfare includes single player campaigns and local co-op play with split-screen. Your fellow soldiers and yourself can fight your way across the battlefield in the safety of your own home.

You can explore 16 maps in locations that stretch the globe, including Eastern Europe, Russia and the Middle East. You can play together as a team against a common enemy or against each other to find out who is the last man or woman standing.

The multiplayer mode also features a leveling up system. As you progress and improve upon your skill, you unlock new weapons, armour and other in-game perks. You will rely on strategy, skill and steady hands.

Maybe you are an assassin in the shadows and favour a sniper rifle. Or perhaps you prefer a rocket launcher with a go-big-or-go-home attitude. Why not give Modern Warfare a shot?

Survival – 2 Player PS4 Games

5. The Forest

If you’re eager to attempt something intense, think of The Forest when in search of the next few great 2 player PS4 games. In The Forest, you play as Eric Leblanc who has to navigate his way through an unnerving, heavily forested landscape with his son Timmy in the aftermath of a plane crash.

Released in 2014, this open-world survival horror game offers single player and multiplayer modes. For the latter, it’s all about team building and trusting your right hand man to have your back. You can play with up to 4 people and work together to survive. PlayStation themselves have even said multiplayer is the best way to experience the game.

A warning to anyone curious about The Forest. Something lurks in the darkness and you don’t want to find out what it is. By day you’re safe enough. But build your camp as soon as possible. And as sturdy as possible.

If you’re tempted to venture out at night, make sure you’re armed and protected with a clear path back to basecamp. A small knife and a molotov cocktail might just save your behind. Otherwise… Well, we’ll let you figure that out yourself.

Sandbox

4. Minecraft

Minecraft is the perfect game to play with friends if you’re looking for a creative outlet rather than something super serious like Call of Duty or The Forest. If you are in the mood for a bit of action, however, you could always take on some creepers, the villains of the game, or maybe even just a few sheep.

Minecraft has to be one of the best two player PS4 games by virtue of the freedom it grants players as a gaming platform. Initially exclusive on the PC, Minecraft became available on the PlayStation Store in 2014. You can play with one, two or three others in the same room. Just hand them a controller.

It also features online multiplayer mode and supports up to 8 players. Keep in mind you do need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play online. You can make a server and invite your friends or join one someone else has created. Then the world is your oyster. Literally.

Plonked onto randomly generated worlds with mountains, greenery and wildlife, you can literally build anything you want. We’ve seen people build the likes of Hogwarts and the Eiffel Tower in their entirety.

It’s really incredible what you and a few others can do when you’ve got time, imagination and a few tools to hand.

Simulation

3. Overcooked

overcooked ps4 best 2 player games

Keeping on the subject of fun 2 player PS4 games, Overcooked falls in a similar vein to Minecraft. It’s simple, understated entertainment. To put it simply, you and your fellow chefs must work together to prepare, cook and serve meals to customers. Sounds easy enough, right?

Added to the PlayStation Store in 2016, Overcooked immediately took off. This quick-paced and pleasingly stressful game is one of a kind with it’s kooky, colourful, and outlandish design.

Stress-riddled virtual cooking is a sure-fire way to build up an appetite. Cook up some grub in couch co-op play with up to 3 other players and relax with a well deserved meal afterward.

Action-Adventure

2. A Way Out – 2 Player PS4 Games

a way out ps4 cover art 2 Player PS4 Games

One of the only exclusively 2 player games just happens to be one of the top 2 player PS4 games available at the moment. Released in 2018, A Way Out is an intense and all-consuming co-op action-adventure game where you and one other person play as two brothers, Leo and Vincent, as they attempt to escape prison.

What’s more is only one person actually needs to buy the game. The other person simply needs to download the free trial and then Voila! It’s go time. It’s a prison escape game like you’ve never experienced before.

You’ll have to gather tools and materials to aid your escape. Once the coast is clear, make a break for it. We won’t give away the plot or why the brothers are in prison in the first place, you’ll just have to play to find out. But it’s definitely worth it.

This includes LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, LEGO Indiana Jones 1 and 2, and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean. What more could you ask for?

Of course, the list is non-exhaustive. There are tonnes of games that are worthy of mention, including Rocket League, Fall Guys, Gang Beasts, Overwatch and Fortnite. Two player and multiplayer games have proven to be a saving grace to many of us during the pandemic, and a resourceful outlet for boredom and frustration brought on by lockdown. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Multiplayer games are community-building creative platforms that help us work on teamwork and communication skills. They are not just entertainment, they can also be very educational. At least, that’s the excuse we tell ourselves so we can play for another hour or two. Or three.

We hope you find something on the list you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to try something new. After all, it’s not real life. That’s the real beauty of gaming: you can just pause and walk away. So what is there to lose? Have fun!
