Instagram remains one of the most powerful platforms for artists to connect with fans and expand their audience. With 82% of Gen Zs and 70% of Millennials finding out about new artists or music through social media or user-generated video content, a strategic profile can be the difference between being noticed and being overlooked. (Deloitte)

In this guide, I’ll be sharing key edits I make every day as a digital campaigns manager and social media manager that optimise musicians’ profiles, content, and engagement. These are the same tactics I’ve seen transform an artist’s brand, leading to more follower growth more opportunities for discovery.

1. Start With A Strong Profile Setup

Your Instagram bio is your first impression. It should quickly communicate who you are, what you do, and why fans should connect with you.

Key tips:

  • Use a clear, professional profile photo that is consistent across all platforms. This can remain permanent or refreshed with every new release/project.

Examples: artist/band logo, press photo, selfie.
  • Write a simple bio that showcases your latest project and highlights your personality. Check out artists in your genre for inspiration!
  • Utilise a link in bio to direct fans to streaming, merch, or tickets.

2. Use Visuals That Tell Your Story

Instagram is a visual-first platform. Consistency and intention will help your profile feel cohesive, authentic and memorable.

Key tips:

  • Use consistent colours, fonts, or themes across posts that establish a recognisable aesthetic.
  • Mix professional shots with authentic, behind-the-scenes content to establish your legitimacy but remain approachable and human.
  • Plan what you post in order to keep them relevant to you, your music and your journey. If you’re questioning why you’re posting something, it may be a sign it’s not cohesive with your artistry.

3. Showcase Your Music

You make music, so make sure your music is at the heart of your profile.

Ways to integrate music:

  • Add a profile song to your Instagram profile.
  • Feature songs in your carousel posts and photo uploads.
  • Always include your music in Reels, which are prioritised for discovery.
  • Link to your latest release in your bio or pinned stories.

4. Engagement Tactics That Work

Building a following isn’t just about posting, it’s about creating meaningful interactions with others and getting involved.

Key Tips:

  • Use Stories for polls, Q&As, and behind-the-scenes content.
  • Reply to your comments and DMs as well as other people’s posts in your genre/community consistently.
  • Host Lives to connect directly with fans in real time.

5. Optimise for Discovery

Social media is increasingly becoming people’s first stop for searching for what they’re looking for, including new music within their favourite genres.

Key tips:

  • Use relevant, niche hashtags that fit your genre and scene. Examples: similar artists in your genre, fan hashtags in your genre ie. #rockmusicfans, other relevant hashtags ie. #womeninmusic.
  • Add keywords to your name field. Example: Indie Pop Artist, Alt Rock Band
  • Tag locations, especially when performing live or announcing gig dates.

7. Track, Learn, Adjust

Optimisation isn’t a one-time task. Keep monitoring what’s working and adapt.

Key tips:

  • Track your follower growth, keeping note of what activity relates to your peaks and troughs.
  • Study your engagement rate on posts and stories to identify the quality of the audience you’re attracting.
  • Identify which content types drive the most saves, shares, and comments. These are where you should focus your energy.

To conclude…

Optimising your Instagram profile is more than just a box-ticking exercise. It’s about creating a profile that authentically represents you as an artist, showcases your music, and connects you with the right audience. By refining your bio, crafting intentional visuals, integrating your music, and engaging thoughtfully with fans, you can transform your profile into a powerful tool for discovery and growth. Best of all, it’s a free marketing tool!
