Have you been searching for a free music streaming platform that generates tailor-made playlists based on your musical interests? Or looking for a platform that will feature your music? If this sounds like you, you should meet Jango. Read on to learn what the platform can offer you.

So, what exactly is Jango?

Born in 2007 and hailing from America, Jango is a free, unlimited online music streaming platform or online radio with a vast selection of readily available tracks at your fingertips. Jango internet radio comes complete with music from every genre you could imagine, ranging from K-Pop to punk, so you are sure to find something that suits your tastes.

Jango radio works by logging music you’ve previously played and curating a customised radio station based on what it’s previously learnt about your musical tastes. This smart approach means you can rest assured that you are getting relevant suggestions, making for an enjoyable listening experience.

How do I use it?

The platform is straightforward and easy to use. Navigating the site or app is pretty self-explanatory for the Jango user. When using the platform for the first time you are met with the home screen. No login is required to use an ever-so-slightly limited version of the service, so you are free to begin listening straight away. Just pop the name of an artist or genre into the search bar and you’re good to go.

Alternatively, you can browse their existing stations consisting of musical genres, eras, or even moods. From here, Jango does the hard work for you, giving you a steady stream of logical listening suggestions. These tracks make up your very own personalised radio station.

Creating an account

To get the most out of the Jango free music service you are required to create a login. You’re able to do this via email, Google or Facebook. This allows you to pick up listening where you left off and limits any untimely interruptions.

There is also the option to download the free Jango music app which, according to Jango, provides the user with the best listening experience with no limitations. The use of the free Jango app could be recommended if you’re intending on using its services a lot. It could be equally beneficial if you are relying on it as your only streaming service. This is available on both iOS and Android.

What are Jango’s key features?

Jango’s main feature, as we’ve already touched on, is creating refined stations based on the suggestions generated by your search history. However, Jango takes this further still. If Jango’s suggestions aren’t to your tastes you have the option to customise stations yourself. Here you can add up to 10 artists to their pre-generated station. This makes the tracks Jango suggests even more specific, suggesting songs from your newly added artists and their similar counterparts. You also have the freedom to remove tracks from your station to ensure that they will never be played again. This can be done by using the thumb buttons.

Another feature to ensure your Jango free radio station is customised to a level that suits your personal preferences is the ‘Variety’ feature. This scale ranges from ‘Popular Favourites’ to ‘Most Variety’ and is shown as a percentage. The higher the percentage, the more varied the selection of music you will hear. The lower the percentage, the more your suggestions will be based on the likes of the Jango community. This takes personalisation to a whole new level. It also demonstrates Jango’s commitment to putting each individual user at the centre of their platform.

What’s the catch?

A platform that’s completely free, unlimited, personalised, and doesn’t even require sign-up details in order to use it may seem far too generous. You might expect to be met with a crippling number of ads during your time listening or a restricted number of skips, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Jango states that guest users can expect some level of commercial interruption. However, those logged in through Facebook can expect only one interruption per day. Even more impressively, no setbacks are experienced by those choosing to listen in Jango’s app. Unlimited skips can be expected for all which perhaps elevates Jango from some of its competitors. However, no platform can be perfect.

Independent artists and Jango radio

Jango supports independent artists by giving them a platform to present their music. Jango explains that the music of independent artists will occasionally pop up on a user’s station. The user will then be asked to rate the track by upvoting or downvoting. The accumulation of votes a new artist receives influences the amount of exposure they get on the platform.

Independent artists can also receive tips through the form of Jango’s virtual currency ‘NeuCoin’. Each Jango user is given 25 NeuCoins every week to spend on tipping Independent Artists. This is a welcome gesture to support and encourage new music. Every user also has the opportunity to save NeuCoins by simply using the platform on a daily basis. Whilst the exchange rate may not be very high, it can’t be a bad thing to earn a bit of cash for simply engaging with the platform.

What are the alternatives?

By this point, we are all well acquainted with many music streaming platforms so let’s draw some comparisons to enable you to find the best option for you.

Jango vs Spotify

Perhaps the most obvious comparison to make is between Jango and key market player Spotify. Firstly, it’s important to compare Jango as a free platform, and the free version of Spotify. Both platforms boast a vast range of music and an incredible quantity of tracks. However, Jango arguably offers a preferable listening experience to Spotify’s free version.

Spotify’s free experience is often tarnished by the anticipation and frequency of ads. Whereas Jango greets its user with a breath of fresh air, with ads not experienced on anywhere near the same scale. Though if you seek a seamless, totally ad-free streaming experience, splashing out and subscribing to a paid platform such as Spotify may not be such a bad shout.

Jango vs Pandora

When searching for Jango, their description states “just like Pandora only NO ADS and more variety”. With such a bold statement let’s see whether Jango can back itself up.

Whilst the platforms are extremely similar, Pandora seems to provide a slightly less personalised experience from the offset with users needing to be more involved in the music curation process by rating the tracks they are playing.

Pandora also offers a free service, yet this contains ads. You can pay to access one of Pandora’s higher tiers, but this immediately defeats the object of a free streaming platform. It seems safe to conclude that Jango is the most economical option.

Our final thoughts

Though it may be a much smaller platform than some of the streaming industry heavyweights, Jango can hold its own and even manages to rival some of the key features of platforms such as unlimited skips, voting, and blocking tracks. Jango is a great platform to consider for those who regard free streaming as an essential but also seek to access some often paid-for features such as few/no ads or unlimited song skipping. It is also great to consider if you’re looking for an informal listening experience with no commitment, being able to access almost all of Jango’s features without even having to make an account.

Jango is also another potential option for independent artists seeking to extend their presence in the world of streaming, with a slight financial incentive for all users.
